  2. Louisiana Purchase • 1803 • President Jefferson purchases from Napoleon of France • $15 million about 3 cents/acre • Became 14 states • Mississippi River to Rocky Mountains

  3. Florida 1819 After Seminole Wars Adams-Onis Treaty with Spain for $5 million and US gives up claims to Texas after Louisiana Purchase

  4. Oregon Treaty • 1818 President Polk negotiates treaty with the British • Set border of Canada and US at 49th Parallel

  5. Texas • Moses Austin makes a deal with the Spanish to settle land by starting a colony • Dies & son Stephen Austin begins colony 1823 • *Mexico becomes independent Spain in 1821 so now there is a problem with deal

  6. Texas Revolution • Under agreement: • Must become Roman Catholic 2. Must swear allegiance to Mexico & give up US citizenship 3. Be on land 7 years 4. Must speak Spanish

  7. Texas Revolution • Mexico new president: Santa Anna • March 2, 1836- Texas declares independence

  8. Major Battles • Alamo: mission converted to military area • Mexicans storm fort & kill almost all of the 200 Americans • Davey Crockett • Battle San Jacinto: Capture Santa Anna • Texas Free!

  9. Annexation of Texas • Sam Houston president of Texas • Remain independent 9 years • Annexed in Dec. 1845 and becomes a State

  10. Mexican American War • Polk tries to negotiate buying New Mexico & making border at the Rio Grande • Mexico refuses & war declared May 1846 • Bear Flag Revolt: seize part of California

  11. Mexican American War • By Sept. 1846 General Zachary Taylor makes it to Mexico City • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: 1848 • Mexican Cession: New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, California, Nevada • US pays $15 million • Gadsen Purchase 1853: changed border

  12. Gold Rush • 1849 People move west to California in search of gold

  13. Russia owns it and needs money after Crimean War William Seward (Sec. of State under A. Johnson) purchases it for $7.2 million in 1867 Seward’s Folly/Icebox: then discover gold & oil Alaska becomes a state in 1959 Also purchased Midway Islands in Pacific* Alaska/Midway Islands
