  1. Scientific demonstrations of tangible harm or benefit for various flow regimes • Underlying mechanisms within components and interactions between them • Possible approach: Whole system experiment • Restoration of a highly degraded watershed • Scientific examination of the 5 components • Adaptive management

  2. Hydrologic and Hydraulic Research Needs • How to properly conduct multi-dimensional hydraulic modeling • Studies are needed that compare the results from 1-D to multiple dimension models - Does it really make a difference? • Is 1-D modeling reliable? • How to properly place/measure transects in rivers and measure/model flows, particularly in complex channels and riparian corridors • Develop relationships between magnitude, duration and timing of peak, low and total flows and riparian processes over a range of geographically different watersheds

  3. Hydraulic Habitat • Physical habitat - a surrogate for biology • Hydraulic Modeling Ability Exceeds our Understanding of Habitat Needs

  4. Geomorphological Research • How do we rehabilitate damaged watersheds? • What are the effects of ramping on channel geometry? • Methods that provide flow recommendations to protect and rehabilitate stream channels to include: • Intermediate and high flow recommendations • Flushing flow recommendations • Sediment and woody debris transport recommendations • Valley forming and maintaining recommendations • Relationship between channel forms and fish production • How to use remote sensing methods to determine channel and watershed scale flows and to monitor the effectiveness of those flows

  5. Research Needs -Summing it Up Temperature Habitat Life Histories, Multiple species Channel Processes Temporal and spatial variability • Putting all the different flow needs together (5 components) • Level of effort • Adaptive management and long term monitoring What to measure How to measure What scale What to measure Biological response

  6. Technology Transfer Publication, Research & Development End User Application Training, etc.

  7. The Ideal Methodology is … • Cheaper • Faster • Better “But we can’t afford that.” “I need the answer by Friday.” “Is the science legally defensible?”

  8. I have identified 46 parameters that are significant to microhabitat selection by razor-lipped minnow juveniles
