  2. Stephen Sondheim • Stephen Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930. He grew up in New York City. As a young boy Sondheim took up piano and organ. When he was 15 years old he wrote a musical for the George school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He also studied music at Williams College in Massachusetts. After he had graduated there he had received the Hutchinson prize for his compositions that he wrote at Williams. He wrote Hollywood scripts for “Topper” which was a popular television series in the 1950s. He wrote and composed music for the Broadway show “West Side Story”.

  3. About the play • Sondheim Composed “A Little Night Music”, which opened in 1973 to Broadway. A Little Night Music tells a story about a middle aged man named Fredrick Egerman and his wife Anne, who is only a teenager. Egerman ends up thinking about an actress which he has been with before and cannot stop thinking about her. Soon they end up together after a visit payed to the actress.

  4. Other plays • Another play that Stephen Sondheim composed was “Do I Hear a Waltz?”, which was based on the 1955 film Summertime starring Katharine Hepburn. It was also adapted from Arthur Laurents’ 1952 play of The Time of the Cuckoo. Sondheim also composed music for West Side Story, which is a spanish version of Romeo and Juliet.

  5. About the author • I am Hayley Apakian. I am in the eighth grade and my favorite subjects are math, science, and social studies. My favorite animal is a horse and my favorite marine mammal is a manatee. I enjoy going horse – back riding in the summer and I love taking my big vacation to Florida. I live with my mother, father, my brother Zach, my two sisters Lauren(older) and Emily(younger), my two cats Misty, Cloe, and my two hermit crabs Bella and Canaveral. I am looking forward to performing in my eighth grade show to help support my eighth grade trip to New York. And I am also looking forward to graduating the eighth grade at the end of the year.
