  3. Overview of War • Republic of Korea- Southern half • Supported by United States • UN allied forces support as well • Democratic People’s Republic of Korea- Northern half • Supported by U.S.S.R.

Origins of the War • Korea was under control by Japan from 1910-1945 • When Japan surrendered at the end of WWII, all their territories were taken from them • At the end of WWII the Allies divided up the Peninsula of Korea at the 38th Parallel. • U.S. took possession of the Southern half • U.S.S.R. took possession of the Northern half

  5. Origins of the War • 1949- Soviets give North Korea tanks, airplanes and money to take over the entire peninsula • June 25th, 1950- North Korea crosses 38th parallel in a surprise attack on South Korea

Origins of the War • Truman fears North Korea is acting like Hitler, Mussolini and Japan in the 1930’s • South Korea asks UN for assistance • UN Security Council meets and decides to send troops to aid Korea. • Soviets Boycott the UN- could have vetoed the UN decision to intervene • “Police action”- military action w/out formal declaration of war

  7. General MacArthur asks for nuclear attack against Chinese cities • President Truman disagrees: • “we are trying to prevent a world war, not start one” • MacArthur goes over Truman's head and goes to congress and the press to get support • Truman Fires MacArthur in response
