This presentation addresses the significant challenges posed by upcoming audiovisual applications, such as 3D IPTV and virtual worlds, on the Internet infrastructure. As bandwidth demands threaten to exceed current investments, the need for enhanced multicast support and reliable transport protocols becomes evident. We propose a revolutionary thinking approach alongside evolutionary implementations, including the AHEC framework for predictable reliability and intelligent routers. Solutions for 3D content representation and rendering also highlight the necessity of progressing from 2D DOM to immersive 3D environments.

Problem Space • Audiovisual transmission - the „Core Application“ of the Future Internet • (3D)IPTV, (3D)Internet-TV, 3D Virtual Worlds, VoIP etc. • Bandwidth demands threat to exceed Internet infrastructure investment by 60% to 70%(*) • Actual Internet has been designed for data • Multicast is essential for many AV services • But MC support of protocols rudimentary (even SCTP, DCCP etc.) • Pure end-2-end paradigm (socket-2-socket) • Alternatives like Split-TCP and Partial Reliability still in a niche • Discussion around evolution vs. revolution ongoing • Revolutionary thinking and evolutionary implementation is the solution * Source: http://www.nemertes.com/internet_singularity_delayed_why_limits_internet_capacity_will_stifle_innovation_web
Solution space • Transport must follow new paradigm • Predictable Reliability under predictable delay (PRPD) • Ingerently multicast enabled • Requires even new theory (capacity for predictable reliability) • Our proposals • AHEC Framework analytically and practically implemented (next slide) • Extensions for link-2-link implementation ongoing • Intelligent routers required, but evolutionary (each single one helps)!!! • Cost-based routing easily implementable • SLA‘s can be integrated into framework easily
3D in the Future Internet • 3D still is not integrated into web • Content representation is 2D (DOM) • Most representations (VRML, X3D) bypass DOM • Solutions required for • Extending scripting languages (ECMAscript) • Notation to describe 3D scenegraphs (XML3D) • Flexible and extendible rendering (shader languages, ray tracing) • 3D displays are still in their infancy • Seamless choice between UHD-2D, HD-3D and SD-MV3D still not feasible
