  7. cupY cup n hoveI jy lwie rhw ilv qwr ] chupai chup na hove-ee jé laaé rehaa liv taar By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within.

  8. BuiKAw BuK n auqrI jy bMnw purIAw Bwr ] bhukhiaa bhukh na utree jé bannaa pureeaa bhaar The hunger of the hungry is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly goods.

  9. shs isAwxpw lK hoih q iek n clY nwil ] sehas siaanpaa lakh hohi, ta ek na chalai naal Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in the end.

  10. ikv sicAwrw hoeIAY ikv kUVY qutY pwil ] kiv sachiaaraa hoeeai kiv koorrai tuttai paal So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away?

  11. hukim rjweI clxw nwnk iliKAw nwil ]1] hukam razaaee chalnaa naanak likhiaa naal O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will. ||1||

  12. hukmI hovin Awkwr hukmu n kihAw jweI ] hukmee hovan aakaar hukam na kehiaa jaaee By His Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described.

  13. hukmI hovin jIA hukim imlY vifAweI ] hukmee hovan jeea hukam milai vaddiaaee By His Command, souls come into being; by His Command, glory and greatness are obtained.

  14. hukmI auqmu nIcu hukim iliK duK suK pweIAih ] hukmee utum neechhukam likhdukh sukh paaeeahi By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained.

  15. ieknw hukmI bKsIs ieik hukmI sdw BvweIAih ] eknaa hukmee bakhshees ek hukmee sadaa bhavaaeeahi Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever.

  16. hukmY AMdir sBu ko bwhir hukm n koie ] hukmai andar sabh ko baahar hukam na koé Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command.

  17. nwnk hukmY jy buJY q haumY khY n koie ]2] naanak hukmai je bujhai ta haumai kehai na koé O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego. ||2||

  18. gwvY ko qwxu hovY iksY qwxu ] gaavai ko taan hovai kisai taan Some sing of His Power-who has that Power?

  19. gwvY ko dwiq jwxY nIswxu ] gaavai ko daat jaanai neeshaan Some sing of His Gifts, and know His Sign and Insignia.

  20. gwvY ko gux vifAweIAw cwr ] gaavai ko gun vaddiaaeeaa chaar Some sing of His Glorious Virtues, Greatness and Beauty.

  21. gwvY ko ividAw ivKmu vIcwru ] gaavai ko vidiaa vikham veechaar Some sing of knowledge obtained of Him, through difficult philosophical studies.

  22. gwvY ko swij kry qnu Kyh ] gaavai ko saaj karétan kheh Some sing that He fashions the body, and then again reduces it to dust.

  23. gwvY ko jIA lY iPir dyh ] gaavai ko jeea lai phir deh Some sing that He takes life away, and then again restores it.

  24. gwvY ko jwpY idsY dUir ] gaavai ko jaapai disai door Some sing that He seems so very far away.

  25. gwvY ko vyKY hwdrw hdUir ] gaavai ko vekhai haadraa hadoor Some sing that He watches over us, face to face, ever-present.

  26. kQnw kQI n AwvY qoit ] kathnaa kathee na aavai tott There is no shortage of those who preach and teach.

  27. kiQ kiQ kQI kotI koit koit ] kath kath kathee kottee kott kott Millions upon millions offer millions of sermons and stories.

  28. dydw dy lYdy Qik pwih ] de(n)daa dé lai(n)de thak paahi The Great Giver keeps on giving, while those who receive grow weary of receiving.

  29. jugw jugMqir KwhI Kwih ] jugaa jugantar khaahee khaahi Throughout the ages, consumers consume.

  30. hukmI hukmu clwey rwhu ] hukmee hukam chalaae raahu The Commander, by His Command, leads us to walk on the Path.

  31. nwnk ivgsY vyprvwhu ]3] naanak vigsai veparvaahu O Nanak, He blossoms forth, Carefree and Untroubled. ||3||

  32. swcw swihbu swcu nwie BwiKAw Bwau Apwru ] saachaa saahib saach naaé bhaakhiaa bhaao apaar True is the Master, True is His Name-speak it with infinite love.

  33. AwKih mMgih dyih dyih dwiq kry dwqwru ] aakhehi mangehi dehi dehi daat karé daataar People beg and pray, ""Give to us, give to us"", and the Great Giver gives His Gifts.

  34. Pyir ik AgY rKIAY ijqu idsY drbwru ] pher ké agai rakheeai jitdisai darbaar So what offering can we place before Him, by which we might see the Darbaar of His Court?

  35. muhO ik bolxu bolIAY ijqu suix Dry ipAwru ] mohau ké bolan boleeai jit sun dharé piaar What words can we speak to evoke His Love?

  36. AMimRq vylw scu nwau vifAweI vIcwru ] amrit velaa sach naao vaddiaaee veechaar In the Amrit Velaa, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His Glorious Greatness.

  37. krmI AwvY kpVw ndrI moKu duAwru ] karmee aavai kaprraa nadree mokhduaar By the karma of past actions, the robe of this physical body is obtained. By His Grace, the Gate of Liberation is found.

  38. nwnk eyvY jwxIAY sBu Awpy sicAwru ]4] naanak évai jaaneeai sabh aapé sachiaar O Nanak, know this well: the True One Himself is All. ||4||

  39. QwipAw n jwie kIqw n hoie ] thaapiaa na jaaé keetaa na hoé He cannot be established, He cannot be created.

  40. Awpy Awip inrMjnu soie ] aapé aap niranjan soé He Himself is Immaculate and Pure.

  41. ijin syivAw iqin pwieAw mwnu ] jin seviaa tin paaeiaa maan Those who serve Him are honored.

  42. nwnk gwvIAY guxI inDwnu ] naanak gaaveeai gunee nidhaan O Nanak, sing of the Lord, the Treasure of Excellence.

  43. gwvIAY suxIAY min rKIAY Bwau ] gaaveeai suneeai man rakheeai bhaao Sing, and listen, and let your mind be filled with love.

  44. duKu prhir suKu Gir lY jwie ] dukh parhar sukhghar lai jaaé Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall come to your home.

  45. gurmuiK nwdM gurmuiK vydM gurmuiK rihAw smweI ] gurmukh naadun(g) gurmukh vedun(g) gurmukh rehiaa sumaaee Following the Guru’s Word one can listen to the Sound-current of the Naad, and wisdom is obtained. Through the Guru's Word one realises Vaheguru is all-pervading.

  46. guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru pwrbqI mweI ] gur eesar gur gorakh barmaa gur paarbatee maaee For a true follower of the Guru, his Guru is like Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu and their spouses. Therefore, one need not worship any deity and instead respect follow his own Guru.

  47. jy hau jwxw AwKw nwhI khxw kQnu n jweI ] jé ho jaanaa aakhaa naahee kehnaa kathan na jaaee Even knowing Vaheguru, I cannot describe Him; He cannot be described in words.

  48. gurw iek dyih buJweI ] guraa ek dehi bujhaaee The Guru has given me this one understanding:

  49. sBnw jIAw kw ieku dwqw so mY ivsir n jweI ]5] sabhnaa jeeaa kaa ek daataa so mai visar na jaaee there is only the One, the Giver of all souls. May I never forget Him! ||5||

  50. qIriQ nwvw jy iqsu Bwvw ivxu Bwxy ik nwie krI ] teerath naavaa jé tis bhaavaa vin bhaané ke naaé karee If I am pleasing to Him, then that is my pilgrimage and cleansing bath. Without pleasing Him, what good are ritual cleansings?
