  2. Adults often have anxieties about new technology but… Everything that’s already in the world when you’re born is just normal;

  3. Anything that gets invented between then and before you turn thirty is incredibly exciting and creative and with any luck you can make a career out of it;

  4. “Anything that gets invented after you’re thirty is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it …until it’s been around for about ten years when it gradually turns out to be alright really.” Douglas Adams

  5. Is Your Profile Positive? 'Children feel invincible online. They believe the material they are producing is private. But they are wrong on both counts” CEOP 'We've have proof that many employers, universities and colleges trawl the net looking for information about prospective candidates. What they see can have long lasting effects and what goes online stays online - for ever.' There is so much to lose for some youngsters....

  6. Recently it was headline news that Paris Brown lost her police commissioner job following discovery of unpleasant tweets from several years earlier.

  7. Your Online Reputation Your online reputation is the perception and opinion that is formed when you are encountered online. This could be when someone visits your social networking profile or reads a comment you posted on another profile. It could also be when someone sees your online photos or an image with you in it.Your 'digital footprint' is therefore anything online that relates to you, whether you posted it or someone else did — you don't even need to have been near Facebook, Twitter or even on the internet before to have an online reputation. The internet can be skewed (positively or negatively) by anyone. Information is 'forever' on the internet; meaning that online content is impossible to remove. In the future there could well be a Profile Score!!!!

  11. Advice to Parents Know what your children are doing online, talk about it and check histories Particularly for younger children keep the computer in a family room - this means you can keep more control over what they do (i.e. webcams) BUT internet access is now very mobile and everywhere! Help your children to understand that they should never give out personal details to online friends - email address, mobile number and any pictures of themselves If you or your child receives spam / junk email & texts, never reply to them or use them A young person must never meet any online contact without an adult they trust Netiquette (good online manners) is very important and always warn against cyberbullying behaviours Don’t think you have to deal with this all on your own, check out these sites: www.thinkuknow.co.uk www.childnet.com www.symantec.co.uk www.parentcentre.gov.uk www.ceop.gov.uk www.iwf.org.uk www.kidscape.org.uk

  12. Family Conversation Ideas 1. Ask children to tell you about what sites they visit and what they enjoy doing online. 2. Ask them about how they stay safe online. What tips do they have for you, and where did they learn them? What is OK and not OK to share online? 3. Ask them if they know where to go for help, where to find safety advice and how to report or block on the services they use. 4. Ask them for help to show you how to do something better online? 5. Think about how you as a family connect with respect? 6. Ask them to let you know when they add a new friend 7. Discuss why you don’t want any internet history deleting
