  3. U.S. Navy Uses • International Alphabet Flags • Numeral Pennants • Code/Answer Pennants • Numeral Flags • Special Flags • Pennants • Four Substitutes or Repeaters

  4. Alphabet Flags • Uses the phonetic name of the letter it represents. • A – Alpha • B – Bravo • C – Charlie • D – Delta • Etc…

  5. Numeral Flags • Take the name of the numeral they represent. • 1 – One • 2 – Two • 3 – Three • 4 – Four • 5 – Five • Etc…

  6. Numeral Pennants • Used only in call signals

  7. Special Flags and Pennants • Used to indicate tactical maneuvers • To direct changes in speed • To direct changes in position • To direct changes in formation • To direct changes in course • Indicate the identity of the unit • Specialized purposes

  8. Importance of Learning Signal Flags Used in the Naval Service • They are frequently seen displayed aboard Navy ships or stations • This form of communication is centuries old and is widely used in the Navy today • Your personal safety may depend on recognizing a particular signal flag
