Last Time’s Homework Read what the Missionary Paul said when he visited a Jewish synagogue in Acts 13:13-41. As you read it, compare his train of thought with the diagram of the Old Testament History in lesson three. Notice how the Holy Spirit led Paul to explain that the Old Testament promises Jesus to His ancestors.

Matthew 1 Why would it be important for Matthew to begin with a family tree listing for his audience? In verse 22 notice the first of 35 Old Testament quotes in Matthew.

Jesus’ baptism kicked off His years of explaining the Old Testament. He started by openly classifying Himself with sinners. 1) They need baptism, and 2) They fight temptations to sin. At Jesus’ baptismGod the Father showed that Jesus pleased Him. Jesus never gave in to any temptation. He lived an ideal, holy, unselfish life. He had traded places with us.

During His three years teaching Jesus trained twelve men to keep publicizing the good news about what Jesus had done. They could speak from first-hand experience because they: 1) been with Jesus, 2) witnessed His return to life and 3) had his Spirit fill them. He would use them to get Jesus’ message out. These miracles 1) marked Him as the one God had promised (Is. 29:18-19), 2) showed His capability to ultimately destroy all evil and 3) helped people physically.

They wanted a liberator from Roman occupation more than a liberator from sins. Jesus’ popularity scared them. Most people wanted the kind of liberator their leaders did. There were some who saw their own sin, their need for God’s help and the promises about the suffering Savior. They saw Jesus for who He was and depended on Him. He didn’t let them down.
