  1. Know your airplane Piper Arrow III PA28R- 201T Tailwinds Flying Club Fall Safety Session - 2007

  2. Single Engine – Retractable Gear Aircraft Accidents* Know your airplane – Arrow III *Based on the 2006 NALL Report

  3. Know your airplane – Arrow III Accident Causes* *Based on 2006 NALL Report

  4. Know your airplane – Arrow III 77 gal. (72 gal. Usable) • What is the total fuel capacity of the club Arrow? • What is the correct fuel grade? • What is the recommended grade and type of oil? • What brand and grade(s) does the club purchase for the planes? 100 LL (Blue) 100/130 (Green) 30W50 (Summer) 5W50 (Winter) Phillips 20W50

  5. Know your airplane – Arrow III 1861.0 lbs. (1692 Std. POH) • What is the airplane basic empty weight? • What is the maximum gross takeoff weight? • What is the Normal category useful load? • What is the baggage capacity? 2900 lbs. 1039 lbs. (1208 lbs. POH) 200 lbs.

  6. Know your airplane – Arrow III Determine Weight and Balance before flight

  7. Know your airplane – Arrow III Located in the plane. Located on the Tailwinds Scheduling Web site. Options available for Tailwinds’ members

  8. Know your airplane – Arrow III Recommended Air Speeds • Normal takeoff, flaps up? • Best rate of climb (Vy)? • Best angle of climb (Vx)? • Maneuvering speed, gross weight (Va)? • Never exceed speed (Vne)? 70 - 77 KIAS (Gear UP) 96 KIAS (Gear Up) 78 KIAS 119 KIAS 183 KIAS

  9. Know your airplane – Arrow III VA is the maximum speed for full and abrupt use of the controls without risk of structural damage. • Decreases as weight decreases • Lighter weights are subject to rapid acceleration from gusts and turbulence Reduce if lighter than max. gross weight – 10 to 15 knots is a good place to start.

  10. Know your airplane – Arrow III • Stalling speed, clean (Vs)? • Stalling speed, full flaps (Vso)? • Best gliding speed? • Maneuvering speed @ gross weight (Va) RecommendedAir Speeds 63 KIAS 56 KIAS 97 KIAS 119 KIAS

  11. Know your airplane – Arrow III Retractable Landing Gear – Up or Down? “As the witness ran toward the runway, he saw the airplane’s flaps drag on the runway pavement. Shortly thereafter, he heard engine power increase; the airplane’s nose pitched down and the propeller contacted the runway. The airplane climbed, banked left, struck trees located about 500 feet before the departure end of the runway and continued to climb.” The National Transportation Safety Board determined the probable cause(s) of this accident to include: “The pilot’s improper decision to abort the landing after the airplane contacted the runway. A factor in the accident was the pilot’s failure to ensure the landing gear was extended during the landing.”

  12. Know your airplane – Arrow III Landing Gear Landing gear airspeeds: Landing Gear (Vle) Max. Gear Extend - 129 Kts. Gear extensions will occur below (approx.) - 103 Kts. Speeds will vary from 78 Kts. To 103 Kts. depending on power settings and altitude. Minimum gear retraction speed (at full power) - 78 Kts. This speed increases with reduced power and/or increased altitude.

  13. Know your airplane – Arrow III Landing Gear

  14. Know your airplane – Arrow IIIComponents

  15. Know your airplane – Arrow III The Artex Emergency Locator Transmitter (EMT)

  16. Know your airplane – Arrow III Autopilot use is prohibited above what airspeed? 149 KIAS What is the procedure for disconnecting the autopilot in an emergency? • Pushing the roll ON-OFF rocker switch “OFF” • Pulling the autopilot circuit breaker Use of the autopilot prohibited during takeoff / landing

  17. Know your airplane – Arrow III Garmin GNS 430 • Garmin Web site - http://www.garmin.com/products/gns430/ • Garmin GNS 430 Simulator web site – • http://www.garmin.com/include/SimulatorPopup.htm • Pilot manuals for GNS 430 downloadable
