  1. How the Grinch Stole Calculus! Ashley Tucker and Emily Pottkotter

  2. He adds and divides, he subtracts and timeses, But his numbers are forced like very bad rhymses 4+4=6,9-3=8, Think that’s bad? It gets worse! You just wait To see these numbers’ horrible fate. 3 times 3 is a hundred and thirty thirteen! No sir, his math, it isn’t quite clean, It’s gone through some kind of distorting machine Making thin numbers fat and fat numbers lean. His name is the Grinch and he is so, so mean!!

  3. Here’s the Problem. Solve ‘em! • The Grinch lives high on Mt. Crumpit overlooking Whoville. Little Cindy Lou Who would like to invite the Grinch to the Whoville annual celebration. She is smart enough to know he won’t come if he isn’t feeling happy. Whoville legend clearly sates that the Grinch is only happy for a period of one hour during each 24 hour period. In addition, the Grinch normally sleeps for about 9 hours each day(from 9:00 at night until 6:00 the following morning. He is never happy while he is sleeping!! Can you help Cindy Lou Who find the best time to climb Mt. Crumpit and invite him to the celebration?

  4. The Following Graph lists the rate at which the Grinch’s mood is changing over a period of 24 hours.

  5. 1.) What would be the best time thatCindy Lou should knock on theGrinch’s door? Explain.

  6. 1.) At 9:00 in the morning, so between 8:30 am and 9:30 am because the graph has the most positive area here.

  7. 2.) For some mathematical fun, when is the graph of the Grinch’s mood concave up?

  8. 2.) We drew the derivative, and found that it was concave up at (13.5,21] or 1:30 to 9.

  9. 3.) Can we determine thenumerical value of his mood at anytime during the day? Explain.

  10. 3.) No, because you can notdetermine his mood when he issleeping silly heads!

  11. He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. Maybe Calculus, he thought, isn’t a chore. Maybe Calculus, perhaps... means a little bit more! • And what happened then? Well, in room 316 they say that the class’ small brains grew three sizes that day. And then - the true meaning of Calculus came through, and the class found the strength of *ten* classes, plus two!

  12. BONUS • What is the name of the singer that sang the famous Grinch song on the Dr. Seuss cartoon? • ANSWER: Thurl Ravenscroft, who is also the voice of Tony the Tiger...you’re GRRRREAT! • What is the name of the narrator of that cartoon? • ANSWER: Boris Karloff
