September 11, 2001 – Attack on the World Trade Center • Afghanistan, a country associated with terrorists, came under fire for threatening America’s national security. • Many Americans assumed – perhaps still assume - Afghanistan was part of the Middle East and populated by Arabs. • In fact, Afghanistan is part of central Asia, bordered on the north by former Soviet republics, on the east by Iran, on the south and west by Pakistan and China.

The Multiethnic Afghan People • Afghanistan is currently defined as a domicile for our enemies. • The U.S. supported Afghan rebels (the mujahedin) in their fight against the Soviet invasion in 1979. • Ironically, a country once defined as a victim of an oppressor is now cast as a destroyer of democracy, freedom, and innocent victims.

  4. Afghan Culture and History • Rigid rules for males and females. • More rigid rules for social class and race. • Amir’s central conflict stems from his inability to define himself within the rigid rules outlined by his culture.

Afghan Culture and History • The geography of Afghanistan has greatly influenced its history and people. • It has been part of many empires, and for many years served as a buffer state between two empires – the British and the Russians. • This has resulted in a population comprised of many ethnic groups that has struggled to define itself as a nation.

Afghan Culture and History • Due to various invasions, Afghanisitan has been influenced by many cultures: • Greek • Arab (Muslim) • Persian • Mongol There is ethnic and some religious diversity, though Islam is the primary religion. The history of being invaded by outside forces has resulted in mistrust of foreign influences.
