  1. Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Learning what to teach within each grade level

  2. Why are the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards important in planning a lesson? • All lesson plans begin with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS), the curricula that the state of Florida has determined will be taught at each grade level.

  3. How do I access the NGSSS? • Next Generation Sunshine State Standards are found on the Florida Department of Education website. http://www.floridastandards.org/downloads.aspx

  4. How do I navigate through the NGSSS? • Choose a core curriculum area • Mathematics • Reading/Language Arts • Science • Social Studies • Then go to the row that states, “Standards Without Access Points” • Click on the column, “With Remarks” • Download to Word

  5. Here’s an example of finding a NGSSS to use for a lesson plan. • Let’s choose mathematics as our subject area for this lesson plan. • Then go to the row that states, “Standards Without Access Points” • Click on the column, “With Remarks” • Download to Word • I want to teach a 4th grade lesson, so I will scroll through the list until I get to 4th grade.

  6. Back to our example • I need to teach a 4th grade lesson on angles in geometry. • Scroll down to Supporting Idea 5 – Geometry and Measurement. • Today, I need to cover a lesson on measuring angles, so I find the Benchmark Code and the language that describes what I will teach. • MA.4.G.5.1 • Classify angles of two-dimensional shapes using benchmark angles (45°, 90°, 180°, and 360°).

  7. Looking at the NGSSS • Under each Sunshine State Standard is a Benchmark Code and a Benchmark. • Benchmarks describe the content concepts that you will teach and assess. • Notice that the NGSSS are divided into large categories called Big Ideas and Supporting Ideas. • These ideas are your Sunshine State Standards.

  8. How do I document this NGSSS into my lesson plan? • Next Generation Sunshine State Standard: Supporting Idea 5, Geometry and Measurement. • Benchmark: MA.4.G.5.1 • Classify angles of two-dimensional shapes using benchmark angles (45°, 90°, 180°, and 360°)

  9. Always keep the end product in mind. • My end product is the student application of the content of the benchmark. • So, even though I’m just in the planning stages of the lesson plan, I’m keeping the final (or summative) assessment in mind at all times. • I’m teaching a 4th grade math lesson in geometry. The NGSSS show me that my students will need to draw angles and classify angles.
