  2. Recent Legislation • HB 967 - 2007 Required standards to be revised and requires 150 minutes per week for grades K-5 • SB 610 - 2008 Requires one semester each year for grades 6-8

  3. 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) Data • Only 38.4% of Florida high school students had sufficient physical activity (current recommendation of being active for a total of 60 minutes per day on 5 or more of the past 7 days).

  4. National Institutes of Health Study (2008) • 90% of children between ages 9-11 met the recommended levels of physical activity • By age 15, only 31% of students are meeting the recommended levels

Physical Activity and Academic Achievement •Educators in Naperville School District (outside Chicago) instituted what is now called “learning readiness” Physical Education class •Students who exercised directly prior to a “extra-help” math class increased their scores on a standardized algebra test by 20.4%, while students who did not exercise prior to the class increased their scores by 3.87%

  13. National Standards • The National content standards define what a student should know and be able to do as a result of a quality physical education program. • They provide a framework for developing realistic and achievable expectations for student performance at every grade level.

  14. National Standards • Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. 2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. 3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

  15. National Standards 4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. 5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. 6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

  16. Revised Florida Standards • Based on the National Standards and guidelines produced by NASPE • Grade specific for grades K-8 • Clustered for grades 9-12 • Content areas defined for grades 6-8 • Content areas developed for choice for students in grades 9-12

  18. New Florida Standards 1. Demonstrate competency in many and proficiency in a few movement forms from a variety of categories. 2. Identify, analyze, and evaluate movement concepts, mechanical principles, safety considerations and strategies/tactics regarding movement performance in a variety of physical activities. 3. Participate regularly in physical activity.

  19. New Florida Standards 4. Develop and implement a personal fitness program to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. 5. Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. 6. Value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

  20. Elementary • Grade Specific • Written for daily physical education • Motor and/or cognitive benchmarks written for nutrition, pedestrian/ bicycle safety and aquatics • Proposed standards and benchmarks are developmentally appropriate and scaffold the learning across the grades

  21. Middle School • Conducive to a semester course format that aligns with SB 610 • More of a variety offered which will hopefully lead to more students wanting to be enrolled in Physical Education • Exposes students to a larger number of sports and activities that can be done outside of school

  22. High School • Broken down into semester courses from a variety of categories • Continuation of the middle school standards but with student choice in regard to courses • Large focus on students adopting a physically active and healthy lifestyle
