  1. Pharm 305 Preceptor Course Review Marlene Gukert mgukert@ualberta.ca Experiential Education Program Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; UofA MARCH 2014

  2. Assessments • You roared we heard. • Student Performance Assessment is waaaayyyshorter!! • Thank you for the feedback; we are learning too • Assessments will be posted in RxP prior to placements

  3. Assessment Process • Online RxPreceptor (RxP) • Primary preceptor must be in RxP • Primary preceptor does online assessment • Discussion and review with student is vital • acknowledgement on each form indicating discussion occurred • Different forms are submitted at different times • Assessment forms will all be listed in April • more information to follow by email in mid April Preceptor Survey; not RxP, sent post placement

  4. Preceptor Assessments • After Week 1 • Early Assessment of the Student • End of week 2 • Midpoint Student Performance Assessment (includes Identification of Learning Goals & Expectations) • End of week 4 • Final Student Performance Assessment and Recommendation of Placement Mark • Assessment criteria same at midpoint & final • 6 Learning Outcomes will be assessed • Professionalism Communication • Care Provider Scholar • Manager Collaborator

  5. Midpoint & Final Student Performance Assessments • For Communicator & Care Provider objective: • preceptor indicates how strongly they agree or disagree that the student demonstrated a set of behaviors. • Then provide overall mark for that objective: • Not Meeting an Acceptable Level of Performance • Needs Improvement/Development • Meets Acceptable Level of Performance* • Exceeds an Acceptable Level of Performance* • For all other outcomes (Professional, Collaborator, Manager & Scholar) preceptor provides an overall rating based on descriptors provided

  6. assessments • Midpoint Identification of Goals and Expectations required following completion of Midpoint Performance Assessments • indicates that midpoint has been completed, also outlines learning goals for balance of placement • To pass placement: • student must achieve at least a “Meets Acceptable Level of Performance” on all 6 outcomes • Preceptors provide “Placement Grade” • Faculty provides the Course Grade based review of assessments and portfolio review

  7. Assessment suggestions • Needs Improvement is OK at MIDPOINT-actually good idea • means that with more practice & effort you think the student will pass, just not there yet • Needs Improvement at Final is a FAIL • If student is considered “Not Meeting an Acceptable Level of Performance” means Major Concerns • Major deficit's, potential fail • Faculty must be notified by midpoint at the latest • If it is questionable whether student may pass; notify Faculty immediately: Renette or Marlene • Need to provide student with warning regarding difficulties • failure should not be a surprise • documentation & examples important • comment boxes on forms, be specific, comments helpful

  8. Student Assessments • Student Self Assessments • orientation, midpoint, final • compare midpoint & final preceptor student performance assessments with student self assessments • Week 1: Early Assessment of Preceptor • Student completes Midpoint and Final Assessment of Preceptor and Site – discusses with preceptor • There are 2 surveys completed post placement by student • course • preceptor survey post placement

  9. Things to Remember • Students are responsible for ensuring that : • all course requirements are met • course portfolio assignments are complete and posted on-line • Many documents do not need to be included in portfolio • for discussion only or review (i.e. DI questions) • There is a portfolio checklist in the manual • Course policies in manual • 40 hours/week: schedule determined with preceptor (evenings and weekends OK) • cannot be paid (including gift cards) • Sickness/bereavement: one day OK; > 1day time must be made up • Student cannot take another course at the some time as the placement

  10. What to do?? • If you think you have a problem • you usually do!!! • Call Faculty early. • you might not have experienced the issue before but we likely have! • Contacts listed in manual/preceptor guide and on UofAwebsite or contact Gaenor Botha or phexed, triage • Gaenor@alberta.ca or phexed@ualberta.ca • Phone: 780.492.9780
