  1. Scandium By: Jeremy Enneking

  2. Discovered • 1878 • Lars Nilson

  3. Atom • Atomic number 21 • 21 protons • 21 electrons • 24 neutrons • Atomic mass 45

  4. Physical Properties • Silver-white • Solid • Soft • Metallic • Density: 2.2989 g/cm³ • Melting point: 2802°F • Boiling point: 5129.6°F • Freezing point: <2801°F

  5. Chemical Properties • Very soft • Combines with aluminum

  6. Isotopes • Sc-44 lives for 3.92 hours • Sc-45 is stable • Sc-46 lives for 83.81 days • Sc-46m lives for 18.72 seconds • Sc-47 lives for 3.34 days • Sc-48 lives for 43.67 hours • Sc-49 lives for 57.3 minutes.

  7. Uses • Stadium lights • Certain Lights • Leak Detectors • Large screen TVs • Scandium combined with aluminum: baseball bats, bicycle frames, and lacrosse sticks.

  8. Found • Earth's crust • Some planets and stars

  9. Extra Stuff • Same as Mendeleev’s ekaboron • Interest to spaceship designers because of it being light • $122,500 per pound • More on stars, like the sun, then on earth • There’s more scandium on stars like the sun then on earth

  10. More Extra Stuff • Turns a pinkish yellow color • The twenty-third most abundant element found on the sun • The fiftieth most abundant element on earth • Twenty kilograms of scandium is used yearly in the U.S. to produce lights
