  2. The Old Testament • The Old Testament can be divided into four general sections: • The Law: Genesis to Deuteronomy • History: Joshua to Esther • Poetry and wisdom: Job to Song of Songs • The Prophets: Isaiah to Malachi

  3. Section One: the Law • Genesis • Exodus • Leviticus • Numbers • Deuteronomy • Also called the Torah or Pentateuch • Written by Moses (with editions after his death) • Written around 1,400 BC

  4. The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. (Habakkuk 2:14)

  5. Genesis: Beginnings • Genesis (Greek) means birth, beginning • It’s the book of beginnings! • What’s in Genesis? • The book is in two major parts: • Chapters 1 to 11 • Chapters 12 to 50

  6. Genesis 1 to 11 • The creation of the world and mankind by God • The mandate to fulfil God’s purpose (1:26-30) • Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule…over all the earth…fill the earth.

  7. Genesis 1 to 11 • The Garden of Eden: • The Tree of Life (Revelation 22) • The river flowing to the world (Ezekiel 47/Revelation 22) • The Fall of Adam • The promise of the Seed/Offspring of the woman to defeat Satan and fulfil God’s purpose (3:14-16) • ‘I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring/seed and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel.’

  8. Genesis 1 to 11 • Cain kills Abel and sin spreads • The Flood and God’s covenant with Noah • The Tower of Babel and the scattering of the people

  9. Genesis 12 to 50 • The Patriarchs (Fathers): • Abraham (11 to 25) • Isaac (21 to 35) • Jacob (25 to 49) • Joseph (37 to 50)

  10. Abraham • One of the major characters of the Bible • Lived around 2,000 BC • Originally Abram (exalted father) • God appeared to him in Ur (near Babylon) and told him to leave and go to the place he would show him • He travelled to Canaan (modern Israel/Palestine) via Haran (75 when he left Haran)

Abraham • Abram was looking for a city (Hebrews 11:10) • Not going back to the Garden of Eden; he looked for what he had seen: a city • God promised Abram that he would bless the whole world through him (chapter 12) • God changed his name to Abraham (‘father of many nations’) • God made a covenant with him that through his offspring/seed he would have a family like the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore

  12. Abraham • At 86, Abraham had a son, Ishmael, by Hagar, Sarah’s servant • Ishmael is the ancestor of the Arabic people • At 100, Abraham’s 90 year old wife, Sarah, had a son…Isaac (laughter) • The covenant was to be fulfilled through the seed/offspring Isaac – the son of the promise

  13. Isaac and Jacob • Isaac, the son of Abraham, married Rebekah • He had two sons • Esau (who sold his birthright); and… • Jacob (twister deceiver) • God changed his name to Israel (prince of God) • Jacob married Leah and Rachel • He had twelve sons…

Joseph • He was Jacob’s favourite son (Rachel) • Sold into slavery by his older brothers • Joseph rose to become prime minister of Egypt • After a famine in Canaan, Joseph reunited with his family • Now numbering 70, Jacob, his other sons and their families move to Egypt • The family grows to become 12 tribes and 400 years pass by (to 1,400 BC)…
