  2. John Steinbeck • John Ernst Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. He wrote a total of twenty-seven books and won the Nobel Prize for literature. He was a World War II correspondent, and wrote novels about the war. John Steinbeck was successful and wrote books that are classics.

  3. History of Salinas • Small Indian tribes first settled in the Salinas Valley. Early in the early Gold Rush years, James Bryant Hill became a pioneer in the agricultural industry. Farming in Salinas helped change the local economy. Lettuce, broccoli, and artichokes helped make Salinas, California one of the wealthiest cities in the United States.

  4. Ranching • Horses and cattle have played a vital role in the economic development of California. The first Spanish explorers introduced ranching and customs of breeding livestock.

  5. The 1930’s • China, Ethiopia, and Poland were subjugated by their neighbors, which led to the start of World War II by the end of the decade. • The “Dust Bowl”, a severe period of dust storms occurred from 1930 to 1936. • Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party rise to power in Germany in 1933.

  6. The Great Depression • The 1930’s was when America’s stock market had its biggest crash causing the Great Depression. Much of the population was in a economic downfall. The unemployment rate was 12-15 million workers. Thousands of investors were wiped out and lost everything. Stores and businesses were closed and left millions of Americans homeless.

  8. The Care of Horses • Taking care of a horse is a lot of work. Horses need attention and loving every day. Some of the basic needs of a horse are a quality shelter, food, water, grooming, and medical care. You will find out more about these needs in the slides that follow.

  9. Stable Management • Having a stable is vital for a horse but a lot of work is involved. Stables must be “mucked out” one to two times a day and new bedding must be applied. Straw bedding is recommended because it is inexpensive, warm, and comfortable. Stables are an important part to taking care of a horse.

  10. Food and Water • Food It is important in a horses food to get the right balance of proteins, grains, supplements, and nutrition. • Water Horses require a constant supply of fresh water. A watering trough with a pipe is a good choice.

  11. Grooming • Regular grooming is important to keep a horse healthy and looking polished. Grooming provides social and physical comfort to the horse. If a horse is groomed daily it will improve their health and coat. A currycomb is an important tool in daily grooming.

  12. Medical Care • A healthy horse should see a vet one or two times a year for vaccinations, a physical exam, and to have its teeth floated. Most horses need shoeing to protect the walls of their foot and their toes. Shoes can protect the bones and tendons in their legs. Horses need to have their hoofs trimmed every week.
