Indirect Tax Taxes on goods that people do NOT see or Pay Directly Taxes on Imports applied to the price Tax adds to the cost of goods BEFORE they are Sold Direct Tax Taxes people PAY on the goods in addition to the cost Taxes are added to the price and Paid by the people Stamp Act, Sales Tax, Taxes paid out of pocket Taxes and More Taxes

It is slow…MUST be January! • To pay for the French and Indian war, English Parliament passed the Sugar Act which placed an indirect duty on Sugar and Molasses • Britain also cracked down on Smuggling and allowed the British Navy to search ships for smuggled goods • Britain also set up courts that assumed smugglers were guilty until proven innocent, causing problems in the colonies • The colonies began to challenge a Parliamentary system that took away more rights while adding more taxes

Who is this James Otis Guy?? • James Otis began to challenge Great Britain’s “Taxation without Representation” a slogan that would spread through the colonies • Samuel Adams would start to form Committees of Correspondence to spread Ideas about colonial protests • One of the Most Effective Protests were Boycotts in the colonies, but other forms of protest became increasingly violent

Forever Stamp • Parliament Passed the Stamp Act of 1765 placing a Direct Tax on all legal Documents and other goods that taxed colonists DIRECTLY • Colonists organized the Sons of Liberty to Peacefully, and violently, protest the Acts • Patrick Henry Protested the Act in the House of Burgesses leading to more protest • Hurt by the Boycotts, Britain repealed the Stamp Act but passed the Declaratory Acts stripping the colonies of their independence

All Around Townshend • The British placed Direct Taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper, and other goods But also made strict laws against smuggling • The Colonists, including the daughters of liberty, once again boycotted the acts • As the British began seizing and searching Colonial ships the sons of liberty started to attack the houses of Tax Collectors • Great Britain would respond by sending troops to restore order to the colonies

Boston Redcoat massacre • As more British Soldiers began to enter the colonies, more and more colonists grew angry with their presence • As tensions grew the streets of Boston erupted in protest, turned violent, and saw British soldiers open fire on the colonists • As stories of the incident spread it would be called the Boston Massacre and be used as propaganda against the British • The soldiers would be Tried in the colonies and be found innocent due to self defense and would be released but the colonists remained angry

Mr. Tea • Though the Townsend Acts, and most other Taxes were repealed, the Tea tax remained • Committees of Correspondence were formed, by Sam Adams, as a way for colonial communication • The Tea Act gave the British East Indian Company control over Colonial Tea • B.E.I.C Tea would arrive in the colonies and be taxed angering the shippers, merchants, and colonists

One Wild Party • Tea Party Protests took place in Charleston South Carolina, New York City, and Philadelphia • The Sons of Liberty organized the Boston Tea Party Destroying 342 chests of Tea • Some Colonial Leaders offered to repay the Damages of the tea Party • Britain wanted repayment and the men responsible brought to trial, leading to more tensions in the colonies

  11. Act TWO • British prime minister, Lord north, Would pass the Intolerable acts to Punish Boston. The Acts would: • Close Boston Harbor until the Tea was Paid off • Massachusetts Legislature was Suspended • British Officials charged with a crime could face trial in Britain not the colonies • The Quartering Act was passed to force colonists to house British soldiers • The Quebec Act gave large amounts of land to Quebec • Thomas Gage became the new governor of Massachusetts
