  2. Career • My passion is to help keep my community healthy. • I am Dempsey Irwin. • I chose this career because of good pay and a well established working environment. • My personality fits this job because I am determined and focused in the workplace.

  3. Anesthesiology • A specialist who administers an anesthetic to a patient before they are treated. • A typical day consists of: • Preparing for surgical procedure. • Giving the patient anesthetics to make them unconscious. • After surgery, shut off all anesthetic flow to wake the patient.

  4. Skills needed • Observant and pay attention to detail. • You have to give patients the right drug, in the exact right amount, at the right time. • Working inside. • Operating machinery. • Working by yourself.

  5. Working conditions • Anesthesiologists work in hospitals, clinics, and chronic pain clinics. • A lot of work is done in the operating room • For complex surgeries you could spend up to 8 hours in the operating room. • Some days you will be in an office doing patient consultations. • Long hours 60-65 hours per week • Pros: Great patient to worker interaction. • Cons: Long hours and intense responsibility. • Two good things about this job are: Knowing how to deal with life threatening situations and the great team atmosphere.

  7. Salary • Entry Wage $90.00+ hourly and $187,200+ annually • Median Wage $90.00+ hourly and $187,200+annually • Experienced Wage $90.00+ hourly and $187,200+ annually. • Depending on experience your wage can range anywhere from $121,000-$400,000 annually (after residency).

  8. Demand for this job • The demand for this job from 2010 to 2020 will increase by 12.2 percent in Michigan alone. • The demand for this job will be forever increasing because we will always need anesthetics to treat our patients with before surgeries.

Education • After High School you will need a 3-year bachelors degree and complete several science courses. • 4-year Medical school. • 3-4 years residency • All doctors must successfully complete state licensing exams. Most anesthesiologists also choose to become certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).

Education extended • Some high school classes include: English, Algebra, Calculus, Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Social Studies, Law and Government and Computers. • I would attend Michigan State University for my pre-med, and then move on to attend the University of Michigan for my Medical School. • MSU is located in Lansing Michigan and University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor Michigan.
