  2. LOCATION: Where is It? • Absolute Location: • Uses latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location) to determine exactly where a place is. • Relative Location: • Described by direction, time, landmarks or distance from one place to another. You are Here

  3. PLACE What is it like there? What kind of place is it? Physical Characteristics Landforms: rivers, lakes, mountains Climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc. • Human Characteristics • The main languages, customs, and beliefs. • How many people live, work, and visit a place?

HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION • How do humans affect their environment? • We depend on it: • People depend on the Tennessee River for water and transportation. • We modify it: • People change their environment by heating/cooling buildings for comfort. • We adapt to it: • We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for the 4 seasons

  5. MOVEMENT • How do people, goods and ideas move from place to place? • Human Movement: Trucks, Trains, Planes • Information Movement: Phones, computer emails, mail • Idea Movement: How do fads move from place to place? Through TV, Radio, Magazines

  6. REGION • How are areas similar to and different from one another? • Formal Regions • Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries • Regions defined by similar characteristics such as the Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain region, Chinatown, etc.
