Backup and Disaster Recovery are Different • Backups are required for different points-in-time • Backups allow you to recover individual files/folders (normally not great for an entire system or volume) • Backups are primarily used for data files because applications are difficult to restore from backups • Disaster recovery solutions should allow you to recover entire systems or volumes quickly • Disaster Recovery absolutely requires secure offsite storage (or you will NOT survive a true disaster) • A complete Backup and Disaster Recovery system is one that provides you with point-in-time backups AND disaster recovery as a single application Backup and Disaster Recovery with SHADOWSAFE IT-010

  8. SHADOWSAFE – How it works The SHADOWSAFE service includes every-thing you need (software, hardware and our online service) in your startup kit. SHADOWSAFE – If Your Time Matters Fact: there are a number of solutions that can make an offsite backup copy of your data (unbelievably some “solutions” could take weeks to complete your initial backup and weeks to do a full restore!). SHADOWSAFE – VirtualBoot demo Obtain hard drive that contains the most recent backup (from VITALESAFE if required) Connect a machine that has Sun VirtualBox (free) installed Browse to a backup (normally the last one) on the external hard drive Right click and choose VirtualBoot Answer a few questions for VirtualBox Backup image will boot as a virtual machine and you are up and running in less than 5 minutes (now go fix server) VirtualBoot Backup and Disaster Recovery with SHADOWSAFE IT-010 11

SHADOWSAFE – Virtual Converter SHADOWSAFE works with physical or virtual machines (or a mixture) With SHADOWSAFE you can convert a point-in-time backup image to .VHD (Microsoft Hyper-V) or .VMDK (VMware) file Move machines from physical to virtual (P2V) and virtual to physical (V2P) directly from the most recent backup of the machine and in minutes HeadStart Restore (optional) – point-in-time backups are automatically recovered as a virtual machine .VMDK “on the fly”.
