  1. Functional Outcome of Patients with Tibial Pilon Fracture after SurgicalTreatmentin Sardjito General Hospital Respati, SH*, Dewo, P** *Resident, ** Staff Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology Sardjito General Hospital Medical Faculty, GadjahMada University, Yogyakarta

  2. Introduction • Tibial Pilon fractures  uncommon and difficult to manage 1. • Number of investigators Very few have examined functional outcomes associated with these fractures2. • The injury  high energy axial force2. • Our purpose  Assess functional outcome pilon fractures after surgery in the Orthopaedic Department of Sardjito General Hospital. • Wound problems, osteomyelitis, malunion, non union, pin-tract infections, and hardware failuretypical obstacles  must be avoid to obtain a satisfactory outcome3. • Mauffrey, C. Vasario, G. Battiston, B. Tibial pilon fractures : a review of incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and complications. Acta Orthop 2011; 77:432-440. • 2. Vidyadhara, S. Rao K,S. Ilizarov treatment of complex tibial pilon fractures. Int. Orthop. 2006 ; 30 : 113 – 117. • 3. Sirkin, M. Plating of tibial pilon fractures: A Review paper. Am JOrthop J. 2007; 36: 13–17.

  3. Objective • To determine  the functional outcome of patients with Tibial Pilon fracture after surgical treatment. • Incidence1% of all lower limb fractures12. • 5-7% of alltibial fractures1,2. • The injury  high energy axial force2. • The concept of treatment  management of the soft tissues, recreation of the joint surfaces, restoration of limb alignment1. • Mauffrey, C. Vasario, G. Battiston, B. Tibial pilon fractures : a review of incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and complications. Acta Orthop 2011; 77:432-440. • Bedi A, Le TT, Karunakar MA. Surgical treatment of nonarticular distal tibia fractures. J Am Acad Orthop Surg2006 ; 14 : 406-416.

  4. Methods • Subject : Patient with Tibial Pilon fractures • Location : Sardjito General Hospital • Time : January 2011 – December 2012

  5. Result • The average patient age was 34±5.6 years (range 28–52 years).

  8. Conclusion • The functional outcome was consistent with the degree of the Rüedi-Allgöwer Classification. • Higher degree of Rüedi-Allgöwer Classification showed decreasing of the functional outcome.

  9. Thank you.
