Composing • Any form of writing constitutes a genre production • Critical inquiry allows for a more thorough analysis and a deeper understanding of the genre • Reflection upon genre productions will heighten awareness of writing skills and processes • Understanding prior-knowledge will guide future lines of inquiry

  4. Awareness of Skills • Pay attention to the genre you are composing in: • Is this a familiar genre? • Is this a new genre? • What do you know about the genre? • What do you need to learn before producing the genre? • What kind of writing skills are relevant to this genre?

  5. Understanding the Genre Begin by examining the genre in question: • Recognize the genre • Consider personal experience • Conduct a genre analysis • Purpose/Audience/Context • Conventions/Features

  6. Understanding the Genre Genre Systems • No genres exist independently • What genres can I connect to this genre? • Don’t focus on similarities • Look for collaborative genres • How do these genres work together? • Examples: Course Materials
