Innovation Action Plan • Continuously invest in R&D activities consistent with its vision of a • verticals-friendly • nevertheless comprehensive • industry standards-driven • Internet-of-Things platform, “On The Spot” • The concept used is this of the “Smart Spaces” where visitors’ terminals, wearable devices, interact with the nearby objects and systems (“things”) to enable personalized operational scenarios without the active participation of the visitor • Started (1Q2014) implementing a Joint Venture project on Cloud Enabling our Sensor Platform for Smart City Applications (“Cloud4Smart”)

SMART in brief • The modern city incorporates a large amount of heterogeneous data, produced by diverse sources like • sensors • cameras and • social networks • The challenge: harnessing these data in a usable approach providing suitable views for the city’s numerous stakeholders. • SMART project introduces a holistic (Data Collection, Processing, Reasoning, Indexing, Visualization) Framework • SMART allows users and developers to build visual applications that empower these environmental- and user-generated data in a meaningful way, appropriate for the future Smart City.

By collecting and combining a diversity of sensor generated multimedia and social data, SMART empowers added value applications in real-life scenarios such as municipality services, advanced news feeds, environmental monitoring and security. The SMART architecture is layered: Layer 3: Applications. They are composed based on queries to the SMART search engine and employ reusable mashup libraries for visualization Layer 2: Search Engine. Performs scalable search and retrieval over numerous SMART edge nodes. Offers query processing and «Smart-Reduce» functionalities Layer 1: Edge Nodes. They communicate with the physical world, by collecting, processing and fusing sensor and social network streams

  9. 1 5 2 3 4 6 SMART: An actual search scenario in the city of Santander • A “Search” visual component (1) to fetch results according to the user’s input, makes a request to the SMART Search Layer and receives a list of results • The results are displayed on an “Event Billboard” visual component (2) • When a user selects a result (e.g. an event), this is shown on the “Event Map” (3). • Images and videos from nearby cameras relevant to an event matching the search made are displayed in the “Media widget” (4). • Crowd analysis of the event and the indicative measurements from non-AV sensors critical for the understanding of the event (e.g. heavy rainfall) are presented in a “Measurements Display” (5). • Finally, mentions in social media related to the event are shown on a “Social Data Display” visual widget (6).

  10. A Security case study: Smart Spaces for Crowd Evacuation A holistic situation-awareness and guidance system for sustaining the Active Evacuation Route for large crowds

One aim, one goal, many results “ eVACUATE aims to address the needs of the safety of citizens during complex evacuation processes following crises” The goal is the creation of a system that • will enhance the effectiveness of complex evacuation operations at any type of venue or infrastructure • adapt evacuation plans to the current conditions • dynamically survey how an evacuation is evolved and • support civil protection authorities The eVACUATEframework employs all key elements in the design and operation of the envisaged system • the eVACUATECrowd Models • the Simulator Tools • the Emergency Operations Control Centre • and finally the major constituent of all proposed work, which is the Smart Spaces.

Smart Spaces, Sensing and Communication in eVacuate • Sensing elements: Cameras, Wireless Sensor Networks (Temp, Smoke, vibration, sound-microphones), autonomous wireless sensors that are easy to deploy and maintain self-healing, self-configurable, etc. Smartphones as ‘people’ sensors. Novel roll-to-roll printed RFID s on paper with extremely low cost • Actuating Elements: The elements and means to guide the crowd out of the risk situation. Will be active, already in place or adapt their operation to answer a crisis situation (self-configurable set of actuating elements). Examples of this kind of elements: Exit Signs, Led displays, push notifications, etc.

Telesto’s Role • Our role in eVacuate • Building a Resilient Communication System: Telesto participates in the development of an interworking gateway that supports First Response and Outgoing calls in priority • Smart Spaces / Sensing: Develop components of the platform for abstracting the heterogeneity of sensors in Smart Spaces • Smart Spaces / Smart-App: Develop the mobile application • Smart Spaces / Social: Extract information (and reason?) from Social Networks information
