  1. Engagement • Provide an Individual Success Plan for Every Student • Require a Capstone Experience for Every Student • Implement Best Intervention Practices • Increase Significance of Middle Schools in Secondary School Reform • Place Greater Attention on an Expanded Educational Range - Grades 6-14 • Expand External Partnerships

Middle School (Grades 6-8) - Required 6-12 Student Success Plans for every student -“Early Warning” and student support systems, 6-12 -Course Offerings in English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Technology, Health, and Exploratory Electives that may include World Language. -Creation of model curricula Language Arts linked to high school English/Language Arts 1 and 2, Algebra I (same as high school), Scientific Inquiry and Experimentation, -Creation of joint common professional development modules for teachers in Grades 6-10 -Completion of 8th Grade Portfolio or Demonstration Project

  3. Assessment • CAPT still in place (10th grade) (reach proficiency or alternative course/test), revised in 2014? • 5 end of course exams (3 typically in 10th grade), Eng 2, Alg1, Geom, Bio, US History • State written, locally scored w/training • Count as at least 20% course grade, 70% to pass. • Retakes/CAPT/SAT scores, college courses, etc.. alternatives to passing exams • 1% may be IEPed out.

  4. Implementation • Adopted by State Bd Ed Oct 2, needs to go before Legislature • State funds to develop training, supports, curriculum, exams • 25 systems to pilot now • Class of 2017 (current 4th graders)

  5. NHPS Implications • More STEM required (1 more science, 1 more math, more tech), possible need for labs, materials, teachers • “double testing” in 10th grade • Support for capstone, student plans, different courses needs to be prepared for in middle and high school
