ASP Mission • Promote and support the specialties of internal medicine as a career discipline • Develop common resources and a uniform voice among subspecialty internal medicine professors and divisions • Facilitate cooperation among other internal medicine organizations • Support new initiatives in education, medical research, and patient care • Form public policy and influence legislation related to subspecialty internal medicine

Membership Statistics ASP membership represents: • >1,000 individuals • 92 nephrology division chiefs and fellowship program directors • >700 divisions in departments of internal medicine • 60 divisions of nephrology • >90 departments of internal medicine • 14 internal medicine specialty societies

Past Policy Initiatives • Influenced J-1 Visa policies • Influenced VA research policies • Enrolled 15 subspecialties in ERAS Fellowships, resulting in 11 participating in Medical Specialties Match • Addressed the generalist-subspecialist interface • Worked with specialty societies to develop in-service exams for fellows • Provided funding for junior faculty to study the gerentological aspects of their specialty

Franklin Williams Scholars • ASN-ASP Junior Development Award in Geriatric Nephrology • Applications due January 30, 2009 • Integrating Geriatrics into the Specialties of Internal Medicine • “ASN-ASP Workshop on Prediction, Progression, and Outcomes of Chronic Kidney Disease in Older Adults” held in May 2008 • ASN course “Geriatric Nephrology: An Epidemiological and Clinical Challenge” taking place November 4-5, 2008 • Funding for an online curriculum for fellows on aging and the kidney

New Policy Initiatives • Task Force on Teaching and Applying Quality Principles • Create a career development award for junior faculty with an interest in quality improvement • Create a system for professional development • Create a clearinghouse for quality improvement resources, best practices, curricula • Draft a white paper on teaching and applying quality improvement into the academic internal medicine and ambulatory setting

New Policy Initiatives • Task Force on Part Time Careers • Developed the ASP Task Force on Part-Time Careers Consensus Statement which was endorsed by all of the associations in AAIM • Drafted a white paper that has been submitted for publication • Working with NIH to create a mechanism for allowing part time faculty to apply for and receive K awards

Formed in 1999, AAIM consists of the academically focused internal medicine organizations • Association of Professors of Medicine (APM) • Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) • Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) • Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) • Administrators of Internal Medicine (AIM)
