  2. Organizing Life’s Diversity • About 1.8 million species of organisms have been named and described. • Biologists have created a system for categorizing organisms, separating them into groups according to their similarities.

  3. Levels of Classification • Species: a group of organisms whose members have the same structural traits and who can interbreed with each other. • Genus (plural genera): a group of related species. • Family: a taxonomic group comprised of members of similar genera. • Order: a group of similar families.

  4. Class: a taxonomic group comprised of members of similar orders. • Phylum (plural phyla): a major taxonomic group, lower than the kingdom, comprising members of similar classes. • Kingdom: a taxonomic group comprised of members of similar phyla.
