In Front of You: Éva Lafferthon and Krisztina Zsukotynszky… • Coordinators of the department • Office: FT 802 • Éva is the one to talk to about routine aspects of the program like requirements, class schedule, syllabi, readers, etc. • Kriszta is the MA program coordinator but she is aware of phd matters as well Orientation session

  7. Departmental Calendar • September 20-24: zero week One introductory class from each course (try to attend all these classes and check out for cross-listed courses) Sep. 24: opening ceremony in vigadó Orientation session

  8. Departmental Calendar • September 27-december 17: fall semester Task: earn 16 credits from courses • October 11: choose temp. Supervisor • October 25: study plan submission • December 6: first short presentation at the dissertation seminar • December 18-january 9: winter break Orientation session

  9. Departmental Calendar • January 10-april 1: winter semester Task: earn another 16 credits from courses • February 7-march 28: presentation at dissertation seminars • March 4: choose permanent supervisor, submit title Orientation session

  10. Departmental Calendar • April 4 - may 23: spring semester No more classes; just prospectus writing • In may: prospectus presentation at dissertation seminars • May 23: prospectus submission • June 6-9: comprehensive exams, prospectus defenses Orientation session

  11. Requirements • 32 credits earned from courses offered or cross-listed in political science, with 16 from your major track (including the dissertation seminar) and 8 from your minor track MAY include 4 from other departments and 8 M.A. Level • Have the director of the Program approve your study plan • You receive copies of relevant departmental policies by email. Note that we just abandoned our previous policy on plagiarism and any discovered case will be referred to the university disciplinary committee, which sanctions plagiarism with immediate expulsion from the university Orientation session

MA Core Courses: Take or Substitute Them If You Haven’t • These courses are requirements for our MA degree • Quantitative research methods • Constitutionalism and democracy or political philosophy • Rational choice or theories of political economy • Comparative European politics or comparative political research • If you have not taken them, you will have to ask for exemption, or take them (sometime) Orientation session

  14. Dissertation Seminars • On Mondays from 5 p.m. • Mandatory 4 credit course, belonging to the major track • PhD candidates present their dissertation progress Orientation session

  15. Information on courses Three short courses(for details check the website) • on "Political Communication and the Development of the Market". The course will be held by Michael X. Delli Carpini (Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania), Michael Traugott (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), Joseph Turow (Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania) and Miklos Sukosd (CEU). • on "Social networks: theory and application". The course will be held by Gabor Csanyi (Cambridge University) and Balazs Szendroi (University of Utrecht). • on "Constitutional Design and Conflict". The course will be held by Donald Horowitz(Duke University). Orientation session

Specialization of the faculty in the Political Science department Lorand Ambrus-Lakatos (on research leave in Fall 2004; back to CEU in January): political economy, economic theory, distributive justice, decision and game theory, modern moral philosophy Dorothee Bohle:political economy of globalization, European integration, eastern enlargement of the EU, transformation in Central Europe Andras Bozoki (on leave at Columbia University in Fall 2004; back to CEU in January): comparative politics (democratization, East Central European politics) and theories of political change Nenad Dimitrijevic: political theory, constitutional theory Zsolt Enyedi: party politics, political culture and subcultures, Christian Democracy, comparative politics, political attitude research Orientation session
