  4. IACUC’S ROLE: represent society’s concerns regarding the welfare of animal subjects

  5. USDA > Animal Welfare Act [rabbits & major mammals] PHS > OLAW > The Guide [any vertebrate]

  6. UF has 3 IACUCs • 01 HSC • 02 IFAS • 03 CLAS

  7. UF’S ASSURANCE to OLAW

  8. DUTIES • semi-annual review of program • biannual inspection of facilities • report to IO major and minor deficiencies & justify deviations • review complaints and reports of non-compliance

  9. DUTIES Cnt’d • make recommendations to IO on program, facilities and personnel training • review and approve, require modifications, or withhold approvals of proposed animal use • suspend non-compliant activities involving animals

(iv) Procedures that may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress to the animals will: (A) Be performed with appropriate sedatives, analgesics or anesthetics, unless withholding such agents is justified for scientific reasons, in writing, by the principal investigator and will continue for only the necessary period of time; (B) Involve, in their planning, consultation with the attending veterinarian or his or her designee; (C) Not include the use of paralytics without anesthesia; (v) Animals that would otherwise experience severe or chronic pain or distress that cannot be relieved will be painlessly euthanized at the end of the procedure or, if appropriate, during the procedure; 9 CFR 2.31.d.iv
