  3. Date The Three Gorges Dam planning and construction began around 1993, but the dam was not completed until 2006. The dam has caused major harm to the environment since it was built, and it continues to cause problems today.

  4. Description • The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric dam in the entire world. It has caused a massive backup in water flow down the Yangtze River, resulting in large deposits of mud and silt behind the dam, and causing the water table to rise in surrounding areas. • The installation of the dam has disrupted the flow of the Yangtze River and caused massive erosion and landslides. Downriver from the dam, there are serious water shortages causing major problems for farming and raising livestock. • Some scientists are even blaming the occurrence of earthquake tremors on the weight of the extra water above the dam. • The construction of the dam has also caused algae and pollution to build up that normally would have floated downstream and dispersed. • Problems resulting from the dam have caused the endangerment and extinction of many plant and animal species in local regions.

  5. Description Continued • There are two sides to this issue. On the one hand, the Three Gorges Dam provides access to a powerful renewable energy source for millions of Chinese citizens. However, the catastrophic effects that it has had on the environment and will continue to have in the future begs the question whether this project in the end will do more harm than good.

Description Continued Continued • The Three Gorges Dam was originally designed to produce power for millions of people in eastern China, however it has caused environmental catastrophes and forced over 1 million Chinese residents to leave their homes and move elsewhere due to flooding and other environmental issues. • The Chinese government has no current plans to get rid of the dam, but environmentalists all around the world are pushing for changes. The problems caused by this project will continue to adversely affect every part of the environment surrounding the dam unless specific solutions are put in place. Some recommendations are to increase environmental protection funding, build water treatment plants, and reinforce the riverbanks of the Yangtze River.
