  4. SAT II Subject Test Requirements (UC) Recommended SAT Subject Tests • Remember, these are recommendations, not mandates. You will not be penalized for failing to take the SAT Subject Tests. On the other hand, submission of these test scores (just like submission of AP and/or IB scores) may add positively to the review of your application.

Recommended SAT Subject Tests Berkeley: • College of Chemistry and College of Engineering: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) closely related to the applicant's intended major. Irvine: • Henry Samueli School of Engineering: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) closely related to the applicant's intended major. • Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences: Biology M, Chemistry, and/or Math Level 2 . • School of Physical Sciences: Chemistry and Math Level 2 for chemistry, earth system science, mathematics, and physics majors. • Program in Public Health: Biology E, Biology M, and/or Chemistry for public health science majors; Biology E, Biology M, and/or World History for public health policy majors.   6. SAT and SAT II Score Submission OFFICIAL SCORES SHOULD BE SENT BY THE APPLICATION DEADLINE!!!! UC Submission deadline: • Freshman applicants for fall 2015 must arrange to have official score reports sent to UC schools by December 2014. If you plan to take an exam December, indicate the planned test date on your admission application. • And don't worry - if you report your scores to one campus, they will be shared with every campus to which you've applied. • By inputting the CSUMentor code of 3594 on the SAT score report form, any CSU campus of your choice will receive your SAT scores.

  7. Validation of Grades with “D” • Grades of “D”s and “F”s are not accepted by most institutions.

  10. California State University Application • CSU Mentor: Will be available for students to submit fall 2015 applications on October 1, 2014. Log on to www.csumentor.edu. Deadline is November 30th. • Complete the application for the following academic year (2015-2016) • No letters of recommendation and no personal statement essays.

California State University Application • Cost: $55 per institution • with a credit or debit card; or submit a check; or complete the application fee waiver on CSUMentor. • SAT: • “All first-time freshman applicants must apply during the initial application filing period (October 1 through November 30) and must provide SAT or ACT scores to be considered for fall admission. Please check with the specific CSU campus of your choice for required dates in taking the SAT or ACT tests. Most campuses recommend applicants to take SAT or ACT no later than November for Fall admission consideration; some no later than December, and a few no later than October” (CSU Mentor). • CSUMentor is available 24 hours, 7 days a week. University of California Application • Has already opened for students to complete applications (August 1st). • Window to submit applications is November 1st-30th. • Must include two personal statement essays (“Freshman Applicant Prompt” and “Prompt For All Applicants”). • The application fee for each UC campus you apply to is $70. • Fee Waiver: You can apply for a fee waiver within the online application and be notified immediately whether you have qualified. You will need to provide your family's income and the number of people supported by that income. • Fee waivers can’t be applied to more than four campuses, regardless of their source (e.g. UC, CollegeBoard/SAT). If you apply to more than four, you’ll need to pay $70 for each additional choice.

  21. University of California Application • If you register with a UC school: • Entry-Level Writing Requirement • As a UC undergraduate, you must demonstrate a proficiency in writing. You may meet our Entry-Level Writing Requirement in any of the following ways: • Score 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English (Language or Literature). • Score 30 or higher on the ACT Combined English/Writing test or 680 or higher on the Writing section of the SAT Reasoning Test. • Achieve a passing score on the UC Analytical Writing Placement Examination, given in the spring every year. If you're admitted to UC and live in California, you'll receive detailed information in April about the exam.

The Common Application • 520+ institutions use this application. • Required essay for the Common App and many colleges require supplemental essay and/or short answer questions. • Many institutions require letters of recommendation. • Dates vary based on each institution • Research early and plan accordingly • Costs of applications vary: • University of Southern California (USC): $80 • Loyola Marymount University (LMU): $60 • University of Portland: $50

Letters of Recommendation • Ask AT LEAST TWO WEEKSin advance. • Ask in person, tell them when you need the recommendation submitted by, and hand a copy of your resume. • Follow up with an email attaching your resume, thanking the teacher, and, again, stating when the recommendation needs to be submitted by. • After the recommendation is submitted, recommend giving the teacher(s) a thank you card. • Recommendation should be completed/submitted by the application deadline.

  29. Choices for the Admission Process • NOT FOR UC AND CSU INSTITUTIONS!!!!

DEADLINES!!! • Always review deadlines for every single institution!!! • NEVER ASSUME THE DEADLINE! • Have applications submitted days (if not weeks) prior to the deadlines. • Do not be afraid to contact universities to ask questions. Do not be afraid to ask Mr. Thompson questions. • Pay attention to the deadline to register (May 1stUSUALLY) at the institution you plan on attending. • Pay attention to the deadline to sign up for student housing and for accepting financial aid awards (grants, scholarships, loans, work study).

Transcripts • Sixth Semester Transcripts • Initial Survey of Colleges: Students Self-Report Colleges that they will apply to in early October. • Contact Ms. Dizon (Registrar) if there are any additions. • Sixth Semester Transcripts mailed first week of November. • Seventh Semester Transcripts • Second week of January • Final Transcripts • Final Senior Survey (graduation requirement) • Students Self-Report where they registered for college • Final Transcripts mailed second week of June. • IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!! • We can only send transcripts to schools we are informed of- if students do not declare a college, we have no idea that a transcript needs to be sent there! • Final Grades- Must have a C or higher!!!!!! • College Admission is conditional- can be rescinded. • Poor grades, breaking the law, behavioral issues at the HS.

  32. Graduation Requirements • On top of passing all courses, there are two added requirements for graduation from the counseling office: • Must attend a “Senior Exit Interview” • Will discuss plans for post-SGHS, student loans, working while in school, and much more. • Will take place before May 1st. • Students must complete the “Final Senior Survey” indicating: schools the student applied to, were accepted to, will be attending, scholarships awarded, etc. Will take place after May 1st.

Financial Aid • FAFSA: • Priority Deadline/Processing: January 1st to March 2nd • First come first served! • Must renew every year and complete your taxes early. • CAL GRANT: Tentatively moving to electronic submission. • SCHOLARSHIPS: Focus after applications are submitted. Page located on school website. • FINANCIAL AID NIGHT…..COMING SOON! • Student-based end of October • Family-based in November.

NCAA • Those students seeking to continue playing sports in college, need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. • Go to the school website: • www.Valiantspirit.com • Go to the Counseling section under Academics • Click on the tab on the right labeled “NCAA Clearinghouse” • Register and then inform Mr. Thompson so that transcripts can be sent there. • Students must send official SAT/ACT scores. • Enter 9999 during ACT or SAT registration to ensure the testing agency reports your score directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center. Test scores on transcripts will not be used. • Speak to your coach and athletic director more regarding the athlete perspective AFTER REVIEWING THE CRITERIA FOR NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE (GPA AND SAT SCORE)

  35. NAIA • Will need to go through this eligibility process as well if considering NAIA schools. • They do not accept test scores off high school transcripts. • Scores must be sent directly from the testing service using our code: 9876
