  5. Physical properties • Sodium is a white substance, that is soft enough to be cut with a knife. • The surface is bright, but when it reacts with oxygen it becomes dull. • The melting point of Sodium is 208.1 degrees Fahrenheit, and it’s boiling point is 1618 degrees Fahrenheit. • Sodium conducts electricity pretty well too. • At this point sodium can form hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide.

  6. Chemical properties • Sodium has one electron in the outermost electron shell. • It is part of the Alkali metal group. • If burned sodium forms sodium peroxide. • Sodium reacts very well with water and lithium. • At some points sodium can form hydrogen gas.

  7. Other interesting facts • Sodium does not occur naturally in nature. • 2.6% of earth’s crust is made up of sodium. • Sodium chloride is the most abundant sodium mineral. • Sodium can be found in the remains of stars.

  8. Uses of sodium • Sodium is used in animal nutrition, and it is used to make glass along with other substances. • Sodium is used in the production of Tetraethyl lead. • Sodium is used to transfer heat as well. • Sodium compounds are use in metal industries, and used in paper. • Metallic sodium is used in making sodium peroxide.

  9. History • The name sodium referred to the word Arabian word “suda.” Suda was sometimes used as a headache medicine. Suda carried over to the Latin language, and became Sodanum which means “headache remedy.” This element was first isolated in 1807, by Sir Humphrey Davy. The Egyptians called sodium “natron.” The first chemical abbreviation was given by JonsJakobBezelius.

  10. Compounds • Sodium chloride • Sodium sulfate • Sodium carbonate • Sodium hydroxide
