  2. MHEC Grant Programs • Improving Teacher Quality State Grant • College Preparation Intervention Program • Nurse Support Program II • College Access Challenge Grant 2

  3. Improving Teacher Quality • Federal funds from No Child Left Behind • Purpose: For higher education institutions to provide teacher professional development in high-need school systems • Around $1 million annually to award 3

Improving Teacher Quality • Federal restrictions • Must be focused on “core academic subjects” • arts, civics or government, economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, reading or language arts, mathematics, science • Activities must be based on scientific research • No partner may use more than 50% of the funds • Must show cooperative planning 4

  5. Improving Teacher Quality • Three Required Partners: • High-need LEA (as defined by NCLB) • School of arts & sciences (offers majors in content areas) • School or division that prepares teachers and/or principals 5

  6. College Preparation Intervention Program • A State program funded with State money • CPIP supports federal GEAR UP grant and provides matching funds 6

  7. College Preparation Intervention Program • Around $750,000 annually to award • Focuses on preparing GEAR UP students to succeed in higher education • Maryland GEAR UP 5-year federal grant began in 2005 7

  8. College Preparation Intervention Program • GEAR UP focus is on mathematics • Activities include academic services, career exploration, college awareness, or professional development for teachers • CPIP provides college partners to work with the students at the GEAR UP sites 8

  9. Nurse Support Program II • Administered on behalf of the HSCRC • To increase the number of nurses by increasing capacity of nursing education programs • 10-year program – began in March 2006 • Approximately $8.8 million annually generated through a 0.1% increase in hospital rates 9

  10. Nurse Support Program II • Seeking initiatives to: • Expand Maryland’s Nursing Capacity through Shared Resources • Increase Maryland’s Nursing Faculty • Increase Nursing Student Retention • Increase the Pipeline for Nursing Faculty • Increase Capacity Statewide 10

  11. Nurse Support Program II • Program also includes Statewide Initiatives • Graduate Nursing Faculty Scholarships & Living Expenses Grants • New Nursing Faculty Fellowships • Janet L. Hoffman Loan Assistance Repayment • Funding for undergraduate nursing scholarships through the Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant 11

  12. College Access Challenge Grant • Services are focused on eligible middle schools in Baltimore City and Prince George’s County • Maryland grant objectives are to increase college awareness, increase the number of students taking STEM classes, and help students make career plans 13

  13. College Access Challenge Grant • Open to nonprofits, including colleges, to provide outreach services to middle school students • Very interested in proposals that hold the student activities on a college campus 14
