General Facts • Capital: Berlin • Population: 82.3 million • GDP per capita: $29,461 • German Unification Day: October 3 (marks the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990) • Germans prefer their drinks without ice. • Nearly every occupation, from mechanic to waiter to accountant, has a school or program designed specifically for it. • 30% of Germany is forested. • Life expectancy: 76 (male); 82 (female) • Currency: Euro

  4. Land/Rivers Land Rivers The Rhine, Danube, and Elbe rivers flow through Germany. • Germany is just smaller than Montana but has about ninety times as many people.

The chancellor is elected by the lower house of Parliament, called the Federal Assembly. The upper house is called the Federal Council. • The voting age is 18

  10. Holocaust The Holocaust began with Hitler's rise to power in January of 1933 and ended on VE Day (May 8, 1945). During this time, more than 6 million Jews and millions of other groups that caught the negative attention of Nazi Germany.

  12. Economy Economy West vs. East Germany The east's economy is far weaker than the west's. East German prices typically are as high as those in the west, but salaries, rents, and overall living conditions remain lower. Why? • Germany is one of the top economic powers in the world • Main exports include cars, televisions and other manufactured goods, steel, and aluminum.
