  1. PEACE : THE DOVES’ SONG Toni Borja and Cris San CE 217

  2. Once there was a group of doves who were good friends. Their names were Dotty, Doreen, Donna, Dana and Diane. Dana and Donna were only happy when they were playing sports. Dotty and Doreen were only happy when they were acting. As for Diane, who was always too shy to talk, she was happy doing anything- as long as she was with her friends.

  3. Although they were different, they enjoyed being together so much that they all built their nests in the same tree. They ate together, visited the bird bath together, flew together, and best of all, they sang together... yes, even Diane. The villagers looked forward to each morning because of the birds' beautiful songs.

  4. One day the birds were resting after their lunch. "Let's play a game!" said Donna. The other birds thought this was a great idea.

  5. Everyone except Dotty, who had eaten much more than the rest. "I don't think I could run or even walk! I'm too full!" Dotty moaned, rubbing her painful stomach. "I think I will stay here. I will join you later.“ She lay down under a bush and rested.

  6. The other birds began to play with a small ball. "Catch this if you can!" Dana shouted, throwing the ball as hard as she could.

  7. Donna ran, keeping her eye on the ball zooming in the sky. All she could think of was catching the ball. She didn't think of looking where she was going.   But she should have…

  8. because…

  9. OOMPH! She ran straight into the bush where Dotty lay resting. She stepped right on Dotty's tummy!

  10. "OWWWWW!" Dotty yelled. "Oh no! Are you all right?" asked the worried Donna. "AM I ALL RIGHT? WHAT DO YOU THINK? YOU JUST STEPPED ON MY POOR STOMACH! YOU DUMB, CLUMSY CREATURE!" screamed Dotty. Donna didn't like being called dumb and clumsy. She got angry. "Well it wouldn't be such a poor stomach if you weren't such an awful, greedy bird!“ Donna shouted.

  11. The other birds flew over as quickly as they could when they heard the two shouting. Donna and Dotty were so angry they said the meanest things to each other. Soon Dana and Doreen joined the fight.

  12. In just a short while, the group was divided into two. Dana took Donna's side and Doreen took Dotty's side. Diane stood by herself because she didn't want to take sides.

  13. Diane was very sad when the two groups turned their backs on each other and flew off. She felt worse as the day passed and the fight didn’t stop.   The two groups would not speak to each other. That night, instead of eating together as they always did, the two pairs of birds ate dinner apart.

  14. Dotty and Doreen didn’t want to be near Dana and Donna. Dana and Donna didn’t want to even look at Dotty and Doreen!  Diane ate by herself in her nest, feeling very sad. She hoped that the fight would end in the morning.

  15. But it didn’t.

  16. When morning came, and it was time to sing, Dotty and Doreen refused to sing with Dana and Donna. "I will NEVER sing with someone as clumsy as Donna!" shouted Dotty.  "Hmph! And I will NEVER sing with someone as greedy as Dotty!" shouted Donna. So the two groups decided to sing separately. They even chose different songs.

  17. “We will sing first." Doreen said. "And why do you get to sing first?" asked Dana. "WE will sing first. 1-2-3 GO!" Dana and Donna started to sing.  Dotty was furious! "Oh no you don't! 1-2-3- GO!" Dotty and Doreen started to sing at the same time as Dana and Donna.

  18. Dana and Donna began to shout out their song so they would be heard more than Dotty and Doreen.  Dotty and Doreen began to shout out their song too!

  19. The music that once made the villagers so happy was now just loud, ugly noise! The villagers covered their ears to block the noise out but the birds wouldn't stop! Everybody locked themselves in their houses just to get away from the noise.

  20. Diane couldn't take it anymore. "STOP! PLEASE!" she cried.

  21. The birds stopped their singing. They couldn't believe that Diane had talked! "Look! The villagers can't stand to be outside because of us. We used to make them so happy with our music,” Diane told them. “We used to make them so happy because we were so happy. How can we be happy when we are fighting?"

  22. Diane turned to Dotty and Donna. “I know that you both got hurt. Donna, you hurt Dotty because you weren’t looking where you were going. Dotty, you hurt Donna because all you could think about was your painful stomach. You didn’t think about how calling Donna those things would make her feel." “You were both careless. In different ways,“ Diane said. “Can’t you please find a way to forgive each other? I miss my friends so much.”

  23. After some time, Donna spoke up, "Dotty, I'm sorry that I hurt you. I really didn't mean to." "I know that. And I'm really sorry for shouting at you and calling you bad things, Donna."

  24. After that, the two hugged each other and the other birds cheered. "Let us sing and share our joy with the villagers!" Diane said, merrily.

  25. The group of friends stood side by side and sang together once more. The air was filled with beautiful music.

  26. The villagers stepped out of their houses and into the sunshine, listening to the doves' beautiful song - a song of joy, of friendship and most importantly, of peace.

  27. Mabuhay! Do you love to play? Are you happy when you play with your friends and family? Did you know that it’s during playtime that we learn how to get along with others? Sometimes getting along with others isn’t easy. There are times when we find ourselves in the middle of a fight. It is during these times that we must remember the importance of peace. Peace is when everybody is happy with everybody else. Peace comes when the people who have done something wrong say sorry and when the people who have been hurt can accept the apology. When there is peace, we can enjoy ourselves and each other more!

  28. Prayer Dearest Lord, Please help me to remember that you want all your children to be happy. Help me to remember that the only way that we can be happy is if we are all at peace with each other. Give us peace in our home and in our school. And give us the grace to be the ones to bring peace wherever we go. Amen.

  29. Peace helps us to appreciate the things we have in common. Title of activity:Word Worm Objective:To be able to identify the words that rhyme with the word “book” by using the context clues. Directions:Diane is a book worm- she loves reading books! She loves books so much, she even loves anything that rhymes with the word “book.” Change the word “book” into another word by changing the first letter of the new word. The clues below will help you complete the word.

  30. B O O K 1. Stop, ___ and listen. 2. Someone who prepares food. 3. Captain of the pirate ship in Peter Pan’s story. 4. A hidden place. 5. Past tense of the word “take”

  31. Note to Parents and Teachers To help children enjoy the rhythm and music of language, encourage them to participate in singing songs and nursery rhymes with you.

  32. Peace helps us to find true happiness. Title of Activity:The Great D Hunt Objective:To be able to identify words that start with the letter “D”. Directions:Dana is on a treasure hunt! She is looking for words that start with the letter D and she needs your help! Help Dana name all the things in this forest that start with a letter “D”. Write the word in the rectangle below the drawing.

  33. Note to Parents and Teachers First of all, be sure to pronounce the words carefully at home. Encourage your child to say words correctly. To reinforce this activity, have your child cut from magazine pictures of things which begin with letter “D”. Have him/ her glue them and make a collage of pictures.

  34. Peace adds energy to our lives! Title of activity: Seed–Eating Contest Objective: Given drawings of seeds eaten by five different doves, the 5 year old student will be able to correctly add thetotal number of seeds eaten by at least 3 doves. Directions: Dotty, Donna, Doreen, Dana and Diane are having a seed-eating contest!

  35. Add the seeds to see who ate the most number of seeds and won the contest. Write the number on the blank.

  37. Note to Parents and Teachers To help your child understand the concept of numbers with greater / lesser value, you can also make ribbons along with this activity and hold an “awarding ceremony” for the seed-eating contest. Allow your child to identify the dove with the highest number of seeds eaten and award this dove with 1st place by writing the winner’s name on the ribbon. 2nd and 3rd places may also be awarded. ____ Place __________

  38. Peace brings us together. Title of Activity: Each one counts! Objective: Given four parts of a bird, the 5 year old student will be able to identify at least three out of four parts by matching the colors with the correct letters. Directions: A dove is made of many different parts put together and each part counts. Find out what some of these different parts are in this activity. Each color on top of the blank stands for a different letter. Look at the color code and see which letter should be written on each blank. Write the letters on the blanks to form the new word. Remember to be careful – each letter counts! Color Code: Ex. E O DOVE D V

  40. Note to Parents and Teachers Going on a color-coded treasure hunt can be an exciting and educational experience for your child. Give your child clues using the same format used in this activity and provide him / her with a color code. Good prizes for this color-coded treasure hunt might be coloring materials or a coloring book.

  41. Peace helps us to succeed. Title of activity: Picture Perfect Objective: Given a 10 piece puzzle, the 5 year old student will be able to work individually and successfully complete the puzzle. Directions: See a photo of the doves’ successful concert! Cut out the puzzle pieces. Paste them on a piece of paper in the right order to see the doves in the photo!

  42. Note to Parents and Teachers Try a Mystery Person Puzzle! Ask your students to bring a copy of a photo of themselves at a happy or successful moment in their lives. Glue this photo onto a piece of cardboard and create your own puzzle by cutting up the photo into several pieces. Place each photo puzzle in a blank envelope and have students pick an envelope randomly.

  43. After the students complete their puzzles and see whose photo they have, they can spend some time interviewing the owner about the photo. This is a good opportunity for interaction. Getting other teachers to participate would also add some excitement to the Mystery Puzzle experience.
