Introduction to Horror • Only form of literature that is named for its intended effect upon the reader • Includes: • Believable, gruesome or revolting events to illicit fear or disgust • Creates a feeling or something obscene or impure • creates a belief that there is a threat to body, culture and or world • Sense that something is monstrous and wrong

  3. Popular With Adolescents Traditional popular horror stories include: • Frankenstein • Headless Horseman • Dracula Many modern horror stories include elements of: • Romance • Mystery • Comedy

Modern Adolescent Horror Popular modern adolescent horror includes many more dimensions than classic horror: Vampires and werewolves • Human dimensions Serial Killers • Immortality and possess supernatural powers Good still triumphs over evil, but the hero or heroine often pay for the victory with his or her life

  5. Popular Horror Predecessors Mary Shelley • Frankenstein (1818) Edgar Allen Poe • Masque of the Red Death (1842), a tale of terror • Berenice (1835), a vampire story Heridan Le Fanu • Carmilla(1871-1872) Bram Stoker • Dracula (1897)

Types of Horror Books Dark Fantasy or Gothic Fantasy • Incorporate a feeling of horror but are set in fantasy world Supernatural Horror • May include vampires, ghosts, werewolves and occult • Set in the normal world • Often called “weird fiction” • Examples: Blood and Chocolate, The Transition of H.P. Lovecraft
