  2. Delegation • the process by which formal authority is granted to a subordinate to accomplish a specific task

  3. When will we delegate? • If subordinate can do better at less expenses and better timing • as part of training program • anything which is within subordinate’s own stated function • to allow subordinate to demonstrate promotion suitability

  4. Not Delegate • Setting objectives and policies • employees’ appraisal • exercise of disciplinary power

  6. Advantages of Delegation • Relieve workload of managers • managers have more time to make important decision • enhances the morale and self confidence of subordinates • better decision • help training and learning process of subordinates

Effective Delegation • Carefully decide the tasks that can be delegated • delegate according to subordinates’ abilities • provide training to subordinates • establish a good feedback and control system • responsibility cannot be delegated away • delegation requires commitments from both superiors and subordinates

  10. Management by Objective (MBO) • a system is which specific performance objectives are jointly determined by subordinates and their superiors, progress toward objectives is periodically reviewed, and rewards are allocated on the basis of this progress

  11. Steps of MBO approach • Superiors and subordinates jointly set objectives • they mutually agree on the objectives • subordinate have autonomy in deciding the ways to accomplish the objectives • superiors periodically review subordinates’ performance against the objectives
