Flash lighting: Recap In Module A we covered – • Flash duration (Typical spped 1/1000 – 1/3000s) • Flash specs (Guide Number G = D x Ap) • Camera ‘sync speed’ (Fastest shutter speed using flash) • Dragging the shutter (No effect on flash exposure) • Foreground exposure (Flash Level, ISO, Ap, Distance) • Dual lighting (Fgd - Flash, Bgd - Ambient) • Settings (Manual)

Dual lighting • Foreground - illuminated by Flash (2) Background - illuminated by Ambient light Exposure Technique: • Set ISO, Ap, Sh for Background (“drag the shutter” if necessary/desired) • Adjust Flash level and/or Distance for Foreground Basic theme: • Exposure balance between Fgd & Bkgd through independent control (Bkgd can be lighter/darker independent of Fgd) Note: The common term “fill-flash” refers to dual lighting where a flash is used (mainly in portraits) to lighten the shadows

  4. Dual lighting: Alter foreground exposure Camera: Background M, ISO 400,1/250s, f/6.3 Flash level reduced 1-stop Flash: Foreground Manual level set Flash level reduced 2-stops No flash Foreground over-exposed

Dual lighting: Flash synchronisation • Flash can be triggered .. • At start of shutter opening • Or • b) At the closing of shutter • These are called “Front curtain sync” (FCS) and “Rear curtain sync” (RCS) • Example: night-time photo of car lights • FCS: image of car at start of headlight streaks • RCS: image of car at finish of headlight streaks
