Title of ProjectPurpose • A handout is in your packet that requires a title for your project, a student signature and a parent/guardian signature. • This handout also asks if you are doing an individual or team project. • This handout is Due on MONDAY October 1!!! • Once title is approved, it may NOT be changed.

  3. Science Project Rubric • A copy of the science project rubric has been placed in your packet. It has specific information on what is due, when it is due, and how many points it is worth. • Please adhere to these due dates. • Late work or no work turned in, will result in deducted points.

  4. ITEMS NOT ALLOWED • A handout is in your packet about items NOT allowed. • Please pay close attention to these items. If a student’s project does not comply, it will result in disqualification.

  5. Science Fair items needed • Purchase board • Title board piece is optional • Purchase decorative border • Purchase decorative letters

  6. Science Fair Exhibit Board • A sample of the project board set-up is in your packet. • Follow the same set-up. • Everything must be typed and labeled. • Bring all other reports in a binder or manila folder.

  8. 1. Identify the Problem • Problem – any question that can be answered using the scientific method. • If it cannot be answered by performing an experiment or making a working model, then it is not a scientific problem. • Stated in a question form. Ex. What color will absorb the most heat: red, white, or blue?

  9. 2. Research • Research – obtaining information about your topic that will help you in understanding your topic and designing your experiment, observations, or model. • You must have 5 sources but contain 3 different sources. • Each place you find information is called a source. Examplesources: Internet, Encyclopedia, Magazine, Interview, Books, Newspapers, etc.

  10. 3. Hypothesis • A hypothesis is an educated guess. • It is your predicted answer to your problem before conducting your experiment. • It must be stated in an If/then format!

  11. 4. Experiment • Experiments – When performing the experiment, be sure to take neat notes and take pictures. • List Materials in a numbered, step by step list. • Be accurate in your measurements. • List Procedures in a numbered, step by step list. Be specific.

Variables • An independent variable is the variable that is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment. • A dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured in a scientific experiment. • A Constant is the variable that remains the same. • A Control is the variable unchanged throughout the course of the investigation.

  13. 5. Collect and Analyze Data • Data taken must be accurate and real. • A graph, table or chart must be generated to illustrate the results. • www.nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createAgraph/ • Kids Zone-Create a Graph

  14. 6. State a Conclusion • Refer to booklet. • 3 paragraphs with 4-5 sentences each. • Include results and conclusions obtained from your experiment. • Explain what your data means. • Must state if your hypothesis was proven or disproven.

  15. 7. Communicate results • Be prepared to give a three minute speech about your project. • Know details of what you did. • Practice talking in the mirror, to a friend, and to your parents. • BE knowledgeable!!

  16. ABSTRACT • A brief overview of the project. • One or two paragraphs. • Maximum 250 words. • Introduction, Purpose, Procedures, Results, Conclusion • Must be typed on website http://www.region6ull.blogspot.com • An example of handout is in your booklet.

  17. RESEARCH PLAN • You must complete this handout online at http://www.region6ull.blogspot.com. • An example is placed in your packet. • A sample of how to write a Bibliography is in your packet.

  18. Bibliography • Place sources in alphabetical order • Book Last Name of the author, First Name, Title of the Book, Place where it was published: Publisher, Date of Publication. • Magazine / Newspaper Last name of the author, First name, “Title of Article,” Name of Magazine, Date of Magazine, Page number.

  19. Bibliography Continued • Internet Site Last name of author, First name, “Title of Article.” Retrieved on xx/xx/xx from www.______.com. • Interview Last name of interviewee, First name, Interviewed on xx/xx/xx by your name on the topic of _____.

  20. 2018 Science Fair • Monday, October 29, 2018 in Gymnasium • Please be at school before bell rings and have project board and all needed information already in place. • Turn in manila folder with all required information to me.
