  1. Parent Math Night Tuesday, January 15, 2008 Chapel Hill Elementary

  2. WELCOME

  3. $8.25 x 8 = Ella earns $8.25 per hour and 1 ½ times this amount when she works over 8 hours in a day. About how much did Ella earn if she worked 10 ¾ hours last Wednesday? Old Math vs. New Math

  4. What’s the difference? The focus of GPS math is for students to have a deeper understanding of math concepts and be able to apply newly learned knowledge to real world situations. Emphasis is on problem-solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication.

  5. A New Problem Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her plan allotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month?

  6. Kindergarten • Understand concept of money by making fair trades with coins • Understand concept of time by experiencing a daily schedule • Understand concept of ones and tens • Begin solving problems

  7. First Grade • Develop understanding of the measurement of time • Add or subtract smaller numbers with ease • Understand addition and subtraction number combinations using strategies such as counting on, doubles, and making tens

  8. Second Grade • Understand place value to three digit • Use correct decimal notation and symbols • Solves three-digit addition and subtraction problems with regrouping • Use simple concepts of multiplication

  9. Third Grade • Develop skills of addition and subtraction with decimals and use in problem solving • Expand knowledge of multiplication and use in problem solving • Represent unknowns in mathematical sentences using symbols

  10. Fourth Grade • Further develop meaning of decimals and use them in computation and problem solving

  11. Fifth Grade • Further understand multiplication of whole numbers • Understand and investigate algebraic mathematical expressions

  12. How Parents Can Help • Be positive! • Communicate with your child! • Have high expectations!

  13. Math homework due tomorrow. How can I help? • If you are unsure about math, don’t panic. • If you are good at math, don’t take over. • Questions to ask: • What is the problem you’re working on? • What words or directions don’t you understand? • What do you already know that can help you work through the problem? • Let’s try drawing a picture or making a diagram. • Tell me where you’re stuck.

  14. Use ROPES • Read • Did I read the problem thoroughly? • Omit • Cross out unneeded information. • Plan • What strategies can I use? • What operation will I use? • Execute • Carry out your plan. • Find the answer. • Survey • Does it make sense? • Explain.

  15. Read Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her plan allotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month? • Did I read the problem thoroughly?

  16. Omit Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her plan allotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month? • Cross out unneeded information.

  17. Plan Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her planallotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month? • What strategies can I use? • What operation will I use? • I have to subtract to find out how many minutes Abigail went over. • I have to multiply to find out how much she will be charged for the amount of minutes that she was over. • I have to add the overage amount to the cost of her plan.

  18. Execute Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her planallotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month? • Carry out the plan and find the answer. Subtract Multiply Add 734 284 127.80 -450 x .45 + 59.99 284 1420 $187.79 + 1136 127.80

  19. Survey Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her planallotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month? • Does it make sense? Explain. • I came up with $187.79. • If I go back and subtract 59.99 from 187.79, I get 127.80. • If I divide 127.80 by .45, I get 284. • If I add 284 to 450, I get 734.

  20. REMEMBER • Be positive! • Communicate with your child! • Have high expectations!
