  2. Lesson Objectives • Able to define Health, Fitness and the relationships between them.

  4. History of Physical Education • Late 19th century programmes- improving fitness • Boer War- lost due to low fitness levels • Mainly Drill and Physical Training Programmes • Physical Education eventually evolved

  5. History of Physical Education • Our knowledge of human physiology has also improved • Know that peoples living conditions, diet and work play a big part in determining how healthy we are

  6. Health “State of complete physical, mental and social well being , not merely the absence from disease and infirmity” Remember:- Just because a person doesn't have an illness doesn't mean they are healthy.

  7. Mental Wellbeing “ A state of wellbeing in which an individual realises their own ability, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to their community”

  8. Social Wellbeing “Elements of living within a community, spiritually, work and social elements” Remember:- You need to understand how being fit and staying fit helps us cope better with the demands of life.

  9. Fitness “ Ability to cope with the demands of everyday life” Remember:- The demands of lifestyle can vary dependent on your job and circumstances. E.g. Office worker and Elite Athlete

  10. Relationships • Being fit is a part of being healthy • Health related components play an important part in helping us keep healthy. • Other factors are also important – lifestyle, diet etc • Generally a fitter person is likely to be more healthy both physically and psychologically.

  11. Relationships • If you are fitter you are likely to have less illness and delay the ageing process!! • However, we will all get ill at some point and we will all get older and age!!

  12. Examiners Tip • You must be able to:- • Differentiate between health and fitness. • Comment on the relationship between the two • Be able to discuss and give examples of the ways that fitness and activity can contribute to health. * Don’t forget limitations imposed by genetic traits, ageing and nutrition.

  13. Exam Question Many people participate in a physical activity to maintain their health and improve their fitness. • Give an appropriate definition for each of these terms (2 marks) • Give 2 reasons why it is possible that a person may be considered fit but not healthy. (4 marks)
