  1. EQ: How was American society impacted by the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Changes in America

  2. Assassinations • The 1960s were a time of great unrest and change in America. • Many people did not like what was happening in the civil rights movement. • Others did not agree with political leaders on different issues.

  3. Unfortunately, 3 important leaders were assassinated in the 1960s. • Assassinate: to murder a government leader, usually for political reasons. • These events made a lasting impact on American society. They took away some of America’s optimism for a while. • Optimism: a spirit of being cheerful & hopeful • They also lead to increased protection of political leaders. Another reason that these assassinations made such a lasting impact was because of a new technology – television. People could see what was going on!

  4. President John F. Kennedy • He was shot in Dallas, Texas in 1963 while riding in a parade in a convertible car with the top down. A man named Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with shooting him from a tall building along the parade route. • Americans and people around the world cried. Kennedy had been a very popular president that helped bring about changes during the Civil Rights Movement and advance the USA in the space race. Lyndon B.   5. Robert F. Kennedy • Robert Kennedy was shot in 1968 at a hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The younger brother of President Kennedy that was running for the Democratic nomination for president.Americans found it hard to believe that another Kennedy family member had been killed! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmc2EzkRDkI

  7. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. • Dr. King was shot in 1968 as he stood on a motel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. Riots broke out across the country. Racial tensions that had been under the surface exploded!

  8. Match the man with the reaction when he was assassinated. • John F. Kennedy • Martin Luther King, Jr. • Robert F. Kennedy • Riots broke out. • Disbelief that it could happen again • Terrible sadness for a beloved man.

  9. “Free at Last” • Martin Luther King, Jr’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech” ends with the inspiring words, “free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.” • This song took Martin Luther’s King’s speech and synthesized his voice.
