Navigation Acts • British Parliament (government body that passes acts or laws) • British passed the Navigation Act between 1650-1700 to protect British mercantilism – have more exports than imports in order to make more money • Colonists could only trade with Great Britain • Smugglers broke the law and snuck in goods from other countries

  4. II. Sugar Act • Tax • Lower debt • Colonists’ reaction

Sugar Act • Taxes is money collected by the government • British needed to begin to collect taxes to pay off their debt • Passed the Sugar Act in 1764 and taxed goods such as sugar, wine, coffee, silk, etc. • Colonists were upset over tax and protested – famous quote “no taxation without representation”
