  8. Affinity and Temperature

  9. Affinity and Temperature, cont'd

  10. Q10 Q10 -- the factor by which the rate of a process such as an enzyme-catalyzed reaction or metabolism changes over 10o C. Only if the temperature change is 10o C

  11. About Values of Q10 Q10 = 1? Q10 > 1? Q10 < 1 (but > 0) ?

  12. Q10 and Arrhenius Compared The less the activation energy, E0, the greater the rate constant k. The greater the temperature, the greater the rate constant. Note that A is an empirically described relationship between temperature and rate (called the “pre-factor” with same units as k).. Note the form of the Arrhenius function is a simple exponential. For the P-chem wonks out there – in fact, A, is temperature-dependent; the equation to the left is the modified Arrhenius equation that takes this into account.

  13. Chemical vs. Physical Processes and Temperature

  14. Ectothermy and Metabolism

  15. Metabolism and Body Temperature in Ectotherms

  16. Seasonal Thermal Acclimation of Metabolic Rate in Ectotherms

  17. Ectothermic Seasonal Regulation, cont'd.

  18. The Molecular Basis of Seasonal Regulation

  19. We will probably get someways into the next set of slides

  20. Temperature Regulation in Ectotherms

  21. Avenues of Heat Transfer

  22. Conduction

  23. Convection Convection is always coupled with other types of heat transfer

  24. Radiation Wein’s law:

  25. The Emissivity Concept

  26. Evaporative Heat Loss

  27. Animals That Thermoregulate Do Not Heat and Cool Like Inanimate Objects Anolis

  28. Thermal Inertia and Specific Heat

  29. Thermal Inertia -- an example

  30. Heliothermic Ectothermy

  31. Review Questions/Points How do animals achieve heliothermy? What is the influence of size on heliothermy? Poikilothermy is the ancestral condition for all of life with regards to temperature regulation. Is it an inferior strategy? What is the inter-relationship between temperature and metabolism in heliotherms?
