  5. What determines our ethics? • Family • Religion • Culture • Ethnicity • Experiences

  6. How does ethics apply to freedom of speech? • 1st Amendment • Restrictions on Freedom of Speech • Time, manner, place • Slander and libel • Inciting violence • Inappropriate language in public • Legal versus ethical

  7. Goal: • Use ethical, responsible speech!

  8. What guidelines should speakers use? • Have ethical goals • Research thoroughly • Do not misrepresent material • Cite sources • Do not plagiarize • Use speech responsibly • Be consistent with ethics

  9. Martin Niemoller: 1892-1984; Imprisoned 1938-1945 • In Germany the Nazis came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.

  11. What guidelines should listeners use? • Be respectful even if you disagree with the speaker • Keep an open mind about the speaker and his or her message • Understand the message before you judge it • Treat the speaker in the way you would want to be treated.
