  2. What is Cognitive Load Theory? • It describes learning structures in terms of an information processing system involving: • Long Term Memory • Working Memory

  3. The Modal Model of Memory Modal Model of Memory distinguishes between three distinct memory types (modes): • Sensory Memory • Long Term Memory • Working Memory

  4. Sensory Memory Deals with incoming stimuli from our senses. Sensory memories extinguish extremely quickly.

  5. Long Term Memory • Refers to the immense body of knowledge and skills that we hold in a more-or-less permanently accessible form. • Consider each of the following questions. • Question 1: When is your birthday? • Question 2: What are the letters of the alphabet? • Question 3: Who is the father of Pope John Paul II?

  7. What is Cognitive Load? • Refers to the total amount of mental activity imposed on working memory at an instance in time. • is the term commonly used in the field of education to describe the amount of work imposed on working memory.

  9. Cognitive Load For this activity we may use the number of digits (the elements) to be remembered as a simple measure of cognitive load.   10. 3 Types of Cognitive Load • Intrinsic Load • It is the memory required by the thinking task at a given time. • Extraneous Load • Results from the techniques in which the to-be-learned information is presented. • Germane Load • Is the load that helps building new complex schema in a successive manner helping the learner to move from novice to expert.

  11. SUMMARY Understanding the three elements of Cognitive Load Theory; Intrinsic, Extraneous, and Germane, can be used to put together a more effective instructional design. An effective instructional design will directly address the limitations of working memory by the reduction of unnecessary Extraneous Cognitive Load and with the manipulation of information in Germane Cognitive Load, while taking consideration of Intrinsic Cognitive Load. Well prepared instructional designs will facilitate knowledge storage of schemas in Long Term Memory.
