  2. Screen Prep • You may need to clean a screen before you can begin • Follow the screen cleaning guidelines on the wall by the wash-up sink to do this • Note: The screen must be absolutely perfectly clean before you begin! • This process requires the pressure washer

  3. Screen Prep Procedure

  4. Drying… • Once the screen has been appropriately prepped, it needs to dry entirely. • This can be accomplished by waiting for 24 hrs or by blowing it dry using air under pressure.

  5. Adding Emulsion(Working in relative darkness) • Emulsion can be applied only on a dry screen in relative darkness! • Do this by using the applicator tool. • The emulsion will be applied by using the “dull” side first, then ‘removed’ by using the “sharp” side. • Apply emulsion in this manner on BOTH sides of the screen.

  7. Emulsion is light sensitive, so… - Apply only in relative darkness - Keep the screen in darkness - Don’t open the container until you are in darkness!

  8. Drying Emulsion • This applied emulsion needs to dry for a period of at least 2 days IN THE DARK! • Do this by placing the screen into a dark cabinet (label your screen with a piece of masking tape first)

  9. Image/Artwork Prep • While your screen is drying you can be finishing up the print process of your artwork. • Once printed on posi paper, lightly spray the image with “PosiBlack” toner enhancer. • Do this outside the lab (it is very stinky!)

  10. More Artwork Prep • Using the light table, touch up any light areas of the image using a black sharpie (wait until the toner enhancer is completely dry first).

  11. Screen Burning • When preparing to burn a screen, you must keep the screen in the darkness. • Take the prepped screen out of the cabinet

  13. Tape the posi paper printout on the back of the screen so that it reads properly when you look down through the film from the front of the screen • Place the screen and posi paper on the screen burning unit with the posi paper touching the glass

  14. This shows the burning unit with screen and posi paper under the film. (The image will not show this clearly, but should be centered as this is under the film.)

  15. Close and lock the top of the unit.Be sure the valve is closed

  16. Check to make sure the light switch is up and in the ON position • Turn the dial to begin the vacuum and light (about 4 minutes)

  17. This vacuum is designed to hold the posi paper printout (film positive) very tightly against the screen and film.

  18. The dial should be set to the 6 minute mark.

  19. Once the screen has finished exposing it will turn off automatically. • Next, open the unit and take the screen out. Put your posi paper in a safe place. • Take the exposed screen to the large sink to rinse.

  20. Set the hose to “shower” and rinse lightly over the back side of the screen until the image begins to rinse out clear. • You may lightly touch or rub the screen and image area as you get it completely rinsed out. All film residue must be rinsed away.

  21. It is safe for your screen to be in the light now as the exposing has been done. • Now, place the rinsed screen in the classroom to dry overnight.

  22. Blocking Out

  23. “Blocking Out” is the process where the image area is open for ink and the rest of the screen is blocked out with paper and tape.

  24. Begin blocking out by obtaining recycled paper and roughly laying out the paper so that there are no seams in the center of the image area (above or below it)

  25. Use the blue block-out tape and begin taping the paper neatly and squarely across the top and bottom. • Push the paper down tight against the screen all around the edges and into the corners before taping. • Tape the length of the image last so that the top layer of tape is in the same direction as you will squeegee.

  27. Doing the Screening Run! • Silk screen printing is the process of pushing ink through a very fine screen that has film emulsion adhered to it in order to create an image area. • The ink will only pass through the image area on to the textile below it. • This process is done with a squeegee.

  28. Squeegee • Items to be screened on • Ink • Spatula & spoon • A few sheets of scrap paper • At least one person to help you • Lab coats • Rags • Before getting ink on the screen, you must first pick out your ink color and gather together the following items:

Begin by putting on the lab coat! • Place the screen on the platten and tighten it evenly into the clamps. • Place a sheet of paper exactly under the image area on the platten. • Take some ink from the container with the spoon and place it along the far edge of the image. This ink should not touch the image yet.

  30. Begin by squeegee-ing through the image holding the squeegee at a 45 degree angle to the screen. Press extra hard and even.

  31. Do a few runs on paper before you begin to set up the platten with your actual items to be screened. • Each partner should practice now on paper.

  32. Use one of the paper prints to lay out the location of the image using little pieces of masking tape. These are registration marks.

  33. Once you know where the image will appear on the fabric, do a practice run on a rag or other piece of scrap.

  34. Place the shirt or other object on the platten and be sure it is completely flat and only a single layer. • Check the registration marks to be sure it is lined up correctly and will print evenly. • Lay the screen down and squeegee over it about 2-3 times. • Note: To make the shirts stick to the platten, spray it with HR-88.

  35. Place the squeegee up against the back end of the screen and against the clamps when you are lifting up.

  36. Curing • Use the curing machine to run the materials through (set to approx. 35) • You may need to run the items through 2-3 times to cure appropriately.

  37. CLEANUP! • Begin cleanup by spooning all excess ink from the screen and squeegee back into the ink container. • Lift all paper and tape off the screen and throw into the trash.

  38. Cleanup • Scrub the ink off the screen using the brush and 2000Green solution. • After all ink is removed, spray the film with “Lancer Strip” spray. This will settle into the film and break it down so that it can be scrubbed off. • Scrub the entire screen with the brush until all film and ink is cleaned off.

  39. Squeegee Cleanup • Wipe all excess ink off the squeegee using paper towel. This will reduce ink cleanup later. • Use 2000Green to clean the rest of the ink off the squeegee. Use paper towel for this step instead of the brush.

  40. Screen Cleanup • Use the screen cleanup procedure posted to clean your screens.
