Learning and Teaching Instituteincorporating Integrating Podcasting and an Electronic Voting System (EVS) into Teaching and Learning Alan Hilliard and Jenny Lorimer University of Hertfordshire HEA, FoL March 2009
Session Outline • Activity to consider the benefits, challenges and issues surrounding large group teaching • Presentation of a case study about redesigning the curriculum to incorporate podcasts and use of an electronic voting system • Hands-on experience of creating a podcast and using the electronic voting system
Learning Outcomes • With reference to podcasting and electronic voting systems, participants will: • Experience some of the applications of the technologies from the students’ perspective (hands on experience) • Consider how the technologies can support problem based learning • Share their experiences of using the technologies
Activity • Working in groups brainstorm ideas around the benefits, challenges and issues surrounding large group teaching • Compile your ideas on the flipcharts provided • Time allowed: 10 Minutes
Activity • Nominate a spokesperson to summarize the group’s ideas. • We will record this to create a podcast

Interference with blood supply is called? • Infarction • Infection • Ischaemia • Inactivity
Which of the following is a type of embolus? • Solid • Liquid • Gas • All of the above • None of the above

Let’s look at a generated report
Other applications using the EVS • Conditional Branching • Comparative questions • Hidden graphs
A 32 yo man falls on his outstretched hand and feels pain in his wrist. On attending A&E, the doctor refers the patient for an x-ray of his left wrist.
The x-ray shows no abnormality. • The patient is discharged • The doctor looks at the x-ray and re-examines the patient
The patient has been discharged, but experiences ongoing pain and progressive decreased range of movements.
The doctor discovers that the patient has pain in the ASB. What does he do next? • The patient is discharged • The doctor requests scaphoid views
The scaphoid views are normal. What should the doctor do next? • Put the Patient in plaster and review in 10 days • Discharge the patient
The patient is reviewed in fracture clinic. The plaster is removed and the patient is re x-rayed. A scaphoid fracture is now clearly seen, and appropriate treatment is followed
The patient has been discharged, but experiences ongoing pain and progressive decreased range of movements. The patient returns via his GP in 6 months time, and is re x-rayed, where it is discovered that he has AVN of his scaphoid.
