Example for Rwanda 1 • Role: Roger • Audience: Roger is writing to his father, Paul Rusesabagina • Format: Roger is in college in America and is writing a letter to his Dad thanking him for all he sacrificed and how kids across the country watch a film based on their lives • Topic: Genocide in Rwanda

  4. Example for Rwanda 2 • Role: General Bizimunga • Audience: United Nations • Format: Bizimunga is presenting a speech to the United Nations, saying how he wasn’t involved fully in the genocide and is pleading his innocence • Topic: Genocide in Rwanda

  5. Example for Rwanda 3 • Role: Madame Archer • Audience: Her mom • Format: Madame Archer is writing a letter to her mom, describing the horrors she saw and how she can’t sleep. Her life will never be the same after what she saw… • Topic: Genocide in Rwanda

Hotel Rwanda: Potential Roles • Main Characters: • Paul Rusesabagina(Hutu): manager of the Hotel de Milles Collines • TatianaRusesabagina (Tutsi): Paul’s wife • George Rutaganda(Hutu): A supplier runs a warehouse. He wants Paul to come to the rally to show support for the Hutu power, and he gives him a shirt symbolizing the Hutu power. • General Bizimungu(Hutu): Makes Paul bribe him with liquor. • Colonel Oliver: Canadian from the United Nations (Nick Nolte) • Thomas and his wife (Tutsi): Tatiana’s brother and sister-in-law • Jean and Odette: neighbors and friends of Paul and Tatiana • Desmond Dube(Tutsi): He is the porter and friend of Paul. • Gregoire (Hutu): Employee who stays in the Presidential Suite. • David: European Reporter • Jack Daglish: (Joaquin Phoenix) Cameraman • Pat Archer: Madame Archer runs the orphanage • Other names to know: • Hotel des Les Milles Collines: Hotel Name • Kigali, Rwanda: City where the movie takes place • Sabina: Company that owns the Hotel where Paul works • RTML: Hutu rebel radio • Interahamwe: Hutu extremist militia • You can think of others too!

Here’s what you are going to do… • Brainstorm on your ‘RAFT’ Brainstorm Sheet’ • Write a ‘Rough Draft’ on a separate sheet of paper • ‘Self-Edit’ and proofread by yourself (see next slide) • ‘Peer Edit’-share with an amigo/amiga • Write your ‘Final Copy’ on Google Docs and share with Matthew Zeman • You’re done and 40 pts richer!
